Druid suggestions?

Hey all,

I have been asked to play a Druid in 5e, and I have never even seen one played in any edition.  So what I am looking for is any suggestions about subclass, race, weapons, anything to help me out.

At one point I thought about a Female Drow, but that could be a bit difficult to play....

Any advise is more than welcome. :-)

Although Drow's stats don't line up well, Druid is one of the better classes to mitigate Light Sensitivity. You get a save-only cantrip, and your wild shape should eliminate your sensitivity when transformed.

Well, I'm not an expert on druids, but lets see what I can do.

First, let me ask you what angle you're looking to take the druid - land or moon?    Because Moon druids, from the look of it, really aren't that big into caring about any attribute on the sheet at all.   "Huh?" you may ask.    Well...   moon druids rely on physical attacks of their beast forms instead of magical attacks.   So, wisdom for spell casting isn't as important to them; sure, it determines number of spells prepared, but again, beast form can't cast and uses spell slots to regenerate, so a +2 is more than sufficent.   Beast forms replace your physical attributes, so there's no need of high physical stats for combat either.   Once you hit level 3, you can start devoting your spell slots to summoning beasts, fey, and elementals as well, so that you'll walk into fights with lots of back up.   Barkskin is also a nice early spell to keep your defenses up.   Neither rely on Wisdom.

Yes, beast form does remove light sensitivity as well, but you also lose access to any racial abilities.    Even the wood elf's nature hiding.   Plus, drow priests turning into spiders is just neat.   (I always thought that druids made better priestess for Lolth than clerics; same is true for any elf, really).

Land druids....    They have shields, medium armor (so Dex of 14 is good to have), and use druidic totems.   Like all spellcasters, you want a high Con, notable Dex, and as high of a casting stat as you can.   Its nice to have a +Wis race here so you can start with that +3 bonus in wisdom.   Meaning Wood Elf and Hill Dwarf are the best options here, as well as humans.     If you don't mind a lower Wisdom, then its more than easy to pick any race out there.   Drow isn't a bad option, thanks to having Faerie Fire and Darkness added to your spell list for free, though the ability to cast Faerie Fire for free isn't as nice, as Charisma isn't a major stat for druids and that spell calls for a save.

So....   if you want a drow druid, then I would recommend giong for Moon Circle.    Just make sure you have good stats to survive a bit out of your wild shape as well.

Do you have any suggestions on a different Race or Class that isn't Human and a Fighter, as those are what I usually end up being asked to play?

Tiny nitpick, but you don't loose racial features while wild shaping, it very specifically state that you don't loose the features from race and other sources. You do loose dark vision if the beast doesn't have it though.

I'm going with a Human Druid - Circle of the Land - and then my first feat is Healer.

I'll use my bonus actions to cast Healing Word.

My first bonus action will be to cast shillelagh, so I can engage in melee with a club + shield.

If someone does go down, I can use a regular action to utilize the Healer feat.

At level 1:

str 8

dex 16

con 14

int 8

wis 16

cha 10

17 AC

10 HP

Shillelagh Club: +5 to hit, for 1d8+3

Healing word: 1d4+3 healing

Healer's kit: 1d6+5

I'd probably choose between the spells that aren't normally in the druid spell list.

ie -> cone of cold / lightning bolt / haste / melf's acid arrow
