Dual bard

I am playing sorcerer and added Bard for more spells. I plan only to go 3 levels. Question is at 3rd level Valor Bard, I gain proficiency in medium armor and martial weapons. Does that mean I gain proficiency in simple weapons automatically?

You should already have proficiency with Light Armor, since it's in the Bard Multiclass Proficiency Table (PHB, p.164).

 

RAW you don't get profiency with simple weapons. But I would ask your DM about this, since you started as a 'weaker class' proficiency-wise, so I wouldn't be too strict as a DM.

IIRC, aren't wizards the only class which is not proficient with simple weapons by default? I was certain that Sorcerers were already proficient with simple weapons, based on their previous incarnations and the playtest materials. My apologies, as I don't have my books with me at present so cannot confirm this for myself.

You should start with the one that gives you the proficiencies you want more. Since you always get everything else from a class when taking a level, proficiencies are the only thing that is affected by what you start as. Don't forget to consider the save proficiencies also, and what proficiencies you still gain taking a class later.

 

I would be more specific in what I think is better, but that depends on what you're trying to do in game. Seems you are focusing more on spellcasting, so I think lacking in weapon proficiencies isn't going to kill you. Con will help you better with the spellcasting(as you've said). Cleric gives you better protection out of the gate, but you still get the same armor and shield proficiencies if you take it later.

 

In this particular case it seems that the question you need to ask yourself is how important are the weapon proficiencies.
