I'm about to start the Elemental Evil campaign with friends, and I had some questions I hoped you could help me with. Our group has decided to make an entire genasi party. I picked last, so I have the earth Genasi. The issue is that I want to play a wizard, which obviously doesn't fit smoothly with his racial stats/abilities.
I figured since I'm playing a race known for being strong, I'd go the reverse and play a cross between doctor House/Beast (from X-men)/Groot type character who looks big, but relies on his intelligence.
My stats would look like this after racials: Str-9 Dex-14 Con-14 Int-15 Wis-14 Char-8
Before I forget, I should also mention that my DM is letting us take a free 1st level feat, so I'll pick up Warcaster to use a shield. Later I'll grab a feat that lets me add +1 intelligence, and then I'll get +2 intelligence from that point forward.
thoughts? concerns? Something I'm missing/ways to improve this idea? |

In that case, I'm curious what cantrips I should grab (starting at level 3).
Right now I'm thinking: Cantrips: Cleric Side: - Light - Guidance - Sacred Flam
Wizard Side: - Poison Spray (I'll be in the thick of it, so the range isn't that big a deal) - Mage Hand (no rogue's in our party, so this seems usefull) - Minor illusion (I figure this will have some minor out of combat utility)
1st Level Spells Cleric: (I can swap at will, but for most day's I'll be preparing these 3) - Bless (at higher levels, will switch it out for detect magic if I don't find a scroll of it lying around somewhere) - Healing Word - Sanctuary
Wizard (Since were starting at 3rd level, I'll have 8 spells I can know) - Shield - Sleep - Earth Tremor (I can move about the difficult terrain freely, and I get to knock an enemy prone, and I get to deal some damage. Seems made for my character) - Absorb Elements - feather fall - Alarm - burning hands - find familiar

If this is the concept you want to play, go for it, but there's nothing inherently wrong with a straight wizard earth genasi. |

You might like Thunderclap from the EE Player's Companion. It's only 1d6 thunder damage, but is AE centered on self. Frostbite could be handy as well. It's also only 1d6, but it imposes disadvantage. They're both spell save DCs instead of attack rolls, so no worries about disadvantage on ranged spell attacks for having an enemy within 5 feet of you, which is going to be often if you are a front line wizard. |

For a Wizard who is going to get in close, Abjuration is definitely your school. No question about it.
With a bonus feat at Level 1, the racial choice becomes less of a problem. At least the +2 Con is well used.
Overall I think your spell selection is strong. You may want a finesse weapon/ranged weapon as well. With a 15 Int/14 Wis until level 4, you are going to find Sacred Flame and Poison Spray are often not going to stick. You are probably going to be better off stabbing with a dagger/firing a crossbow.
I know there aren't a lot of good Cleric Cantrips after Guidance and Light, but Sacred Flame is probably never going to do much for you, and is going to be largely redundant with Poison Spray. I might consider taking Thaumaturgy just for the thematics. You are an earth Genasi, a thundering booming voice might be a fun addition. |
| #11AranadorJun 16, 2015 23:23:11 | I played a "front line" wizard for a bit - although as a mountain dwarf and no MC, just abjurer levels. It worked great, and to me, was a lot of fun, as I would be hitting people with hammers or throwing axes at them, instead of using cantrips, but when the situation was ripe, could do the wizard thing. Was the toughest character in the party by a narrow margin. |
