I'm a D&D player just starting to get into 5th edition, and wanted to try a Wood Elf Archer (clichéd, but I still want to try it), and my original idea was a Ranger splashing Rogue for the Assassin abilities, but I heard that the Ranger class is really underpowered compared to a fighter. So my question is, what is the best class, or combination of classes, for an archer, and at what levels, in your opinion?

Monk 5 / Rogue 15 makes a nice ninja feel

Barbarian 5 / Rogue 15 gives you that movie hero feel of standing there taking shots and shrugging it off while shooting everyone back.

Fighter 5 / Rogue 15 with battle master superiority dice feels the most like a traditional archer that can cause amazing things to happen with his shots

Ranger 5 / Rogue 15 is probably the best in terms of pure damage of all these classes

I like what all of these builds offer about equally well.

There is also a fighter 11 / Rogue 9.  This archer feels alot different than the others because you get the rogues cunning action so late which means you aren't very mobile.  However you get the most attacks and alot of feats and stats which helps make you one heck of a damage dealer at level 11 and beyond.

if you want something simple, fighter. they have the highest single target damage, but little else.
if you want to do more then just shoot, ranger. they can do tricks and AoE damage.
if you want to be sneaky sniper, rouge.

Hunter 5 can pick up Horde Breaker for a situational free attack.

I am playing a Ranger 5 (hunter with Horde breaker) Rogue 1 (heading rogue assassin from 6-20) and my character does more damage than any other in our group of 8.

We have a Monk, battle master fighter, champion fighter, paladin, warlock, sorcerer/warlock and a thief but the Ranger with Longbow and sharpshooter does crazy damage.  Having maxed out Dex, a good Wisdom and taking expertise in perception and stealth (added with the pass without trace spell) I can basically vanish and deal insane damage from miles away.

Thank you for the replies. The character concept is definitely one of a sneaky sniper Wood Elf. Probably going pure Rogue would be best, but I also wanted to throw in Ranger for the woodland field. Fighter is great, but doesn't fit the style I'm going for. I'll probably go Ranger 5/Rogue 15. A quick question though, with only 5 ability score improvements, which feats would be worth it. With starting Dex of 17, Con of 14, and Wisdom of 15, I'm going to need a few of those. I could always go Variant Human, but the Wood Elf has a lot going for her. Also, I'm definitely grabbing Sharpshooter, but after that, what feats are worth grabbing? The one's I'm considering are Skulker, Alert, and maybe Crossbow Master.

I am currently playing just that character.  I wanted an archer, and settled on a RangerRogue.  I am loving it.

It was a VERY long time deciding between Wood Elf and Human... I am glad I picked human (Sharpshooter), but I could see Wood Elf.

Expertise in Perception and Stealth lets me sneak up and find targets, Archery, Hunters Mark,  and Collosus slayer combines with my SA dice for some big hits, and Sharpshooter can go on top of that for lower AC creatures. Cunning Action lets me disengage, and Uncanny Dodge to stay safe.

To be honest, my favorite part of the SS feat has been the increased range and the ignore cover aspects....

I am going Ranger 2, then Rogue 2, then Ranger 5, then Rogue 5.  Once I am at Ranger5/Rogue5...not sure. May continue with Rogue, may dip 2 into fighter for Action Surge, maybe 3 for battlemaster.... I may never get to level 11 do I'm not overly worried.

I really like it, and with Stealth and Perception, I can do more than just shoot thiings.

As for Feats I would say Sharpshooter has been key for me especially when hordebreaker meaning I can technically use it three times a round from level 5.

I am going Assassin so I will take the Alert feat and I will pick up Resilant Con too as the rogue gets proficiency in wisdom saves so technically at 20th level I would have the big three save proficiencies.

Everything else will be Dex and Wis increases.
