Ok so I have an idea for a barbarian though he doesnt really follow the norm.
He would be an egyptian themed warrior that uses a two handed khopesh so thinking the stats would be greatsword for this and his totem would be Horus for the Eagle path possibly Anubis for wolf totem. His alignment would be Lawful Good. I need help as to why he has rage. and other barbarian traits yet is not a bloodthirsty crazy man like typical barbarian builds are. Also some help for back story would be cool. So what do you guys think? Show me what ya got. |
| #2RPGBGSep 25, 2014 0:00:33 | Rage can just as well be reflavored as a religious zeal, battle trance or righteous wrath. There is nothing overly bloodthirsty or crazy in the barbarian mechanics. |
| #3greensparcsSep 25, 2014 0:14:49 | Hmm the religious zeal could work though hearing it just makes me think of a paladin Wrath also sounds promising. Think I will work on that. Now just need some sort of story for him, I do not know much about the land of Mulhorand, hoping someone very familiar with Faerun can help me with that part |
| #4KentusSep 25, 2014 9:24:09 | Generally you could re-use the 4e barbarian fluff and say, that he makes himself possess by spirits. For Anubis it might be the spirit of the dead warriors, who were too powerful to be fed to Ammit, while too impure to make the journey to Duat. They were held back for times of need and you got one of these. In Horus' case, you might have one of his spirit servants as a guide and mentor (Totem Warrior |

I don't even see a need to change a thing in the class*, just reflavour some powers and take the acolyte or soldier background!
Totem Spirit: Wolf, Aspect of the Beast: Wolf and Totemic Attunement Bear or Wolf, would all work very well for a trained-infantry character as they focus on making stuff awesome with friends.
Well actually one thing to change would be change "Spirit Walker" from "Commune with Nature" to"Commune". - to fit contacting a deity. Both are level 5 divinations a casting time: 1 minute and can be cast as a ritual. I'd be cool with doing this as a DM myself.
On a minor note, Barbarians benefit more from Greataxes with 1D12 damage than Greatswords with 2D6 when they get Brutal Critical at level 9. |
| #6greensparcsSep 25, 2014 11:30:46 | I really like your Idea Kentus! the dead warrior thing works great! Sadly one of my dm's is strongly against Barbarians so I wont be able to use him in that campaign so if my character dies in one of my other games this is likely to be my next character. As to you point Illithbix, I dont know of any egyptian analog that I can think of off hand that looks like a big two handed axe. Perhaps some sort of pole arm I liked the idea of a massive bronze Khopesh and it fits with a greatsword stat, How much different is the effects of 1d12 over 2d6? |
| #7Danny_MontannySep 25, 2014 13:07:15 | You be the judge.
Greatsword vs Greataxe crit average damage: Level 9: 10 vs 13 Level 13: 14 vs 19 Level 17: 17 vs 26
These are just damage dice with no modifiers.
If you're a Half-Orc the difference is a lot more noticeable.
Check this out for Egyptian axes: http://www.touregypt.net/featurestories/edgedweapons.htm |
| #8greensparcsSep 25, 2014 18:05:07 | No for half orc, would not fit the ideal I have, the axes are single handed axes, and lack the aesthetic I am looking for, a maul could work to I suppose. unless the sword makes him unplayable and he is vastly underwhelming then I can always switch over

| #11OrwellianHaggisSep 26, 2014 14:20:35 | I suggest reflavouring Rage as Bullet Time. Or Blade Time. |
| #12greensparcsSep 27, 2014 0:41:45 | can you ellaborate? |
| #13NovacatSep 27, 2014 1:59:59 | Rage could even be flavored as the spirit of his god coming upon him in a time of need. You could even say that your character is not consciously in control of the rage, even though you are as a player. |

| #16AhrimonSep 27, 2014 11:30:59 | The movie equalibrium, when the main character focuses himself so much to shut off all of his emotions for the final battle sequence, could easily be a barbarian rage effect. It's just re-fluffed as a combat trance. In the last samurai they talked about a "no mind" for battle. Basically you just act and not think about it. All of that could be re-flavored rage abilities. |
| #17UndrhilSep 27, 2014 11:34:22 | Actually, an image search on Google turns up a bunch of images of swords that look remarkeably like scimitars and appear to be one-handed weapons (ie, not greatswords.)
|
| #18greensparcsSep 27, 2014 12:04:15 | I see him with "great" khopesh looking very similar to this though larger in the length and a two handed handle. Probably a 36" blade and around 50" or so in total length. there is no stats for a two handed scimatar so since it is a sword and I wanted a two handed variant that was the closest analog I could think of. |
| #19DireachSep 27, 2014 20:55:01 | You just want a cool-looking greatsword for him, so it can look like that if you want. It doesn't change anything. Really, a khopesh is enough of a sword-axe hybrid that you could say it was a greataxe, if you wanted to.
For your rage, you could describe it as being briefly infused with the power of your patron god(s). They may not deign to lend you power for very long, hence the limitations of the rage. While you're raging, you might present some characteristics of the god who is lending you strength, or they might even appear as a ghostly or misty form above or around you.
