Odd... it posted before I put in the text.

Progression:

EK/Abjurer

Fighter 1-5 (select EK, obviously)

Wizard 1-5 (Abjuration, working to 3rd level spells for Haste)

Fighter 6-11 (get Third Attack)

Wizard 6-9 (Get 5th Level spells)

ABI: 6 - +2 Str (x2), Int +2 (x2), 2 feats

Benefits: Same HP, more spell slots available, wider variety pf spells available, haste at 10 instead of 3rd attack at 11.

Seems less fun to me. War Magic comes so late as to be anticlimax. As a 7th level ability, it's pretty good. As a 12th level ability, meh. Same with Eldritch Strike.

The goal seems to be early access to Haste at the expense of, well, being an Eldritch Knight. You gain spell flexibility at the expense of sword & spell flexibility.

11/9 Fighter/Wizard is the ideal. Extra Attack II is a big deal. Unless you're not using a weapon in which case why are you going Fighter at all?

Right - it's not just Haste, though that is a rather large bonus. The goal is to lose as little as possible while gaining access to the divination and transmutation and conjuration spells that I want as a low-attribute spellcaster. Sentinel/Grapple + Cloud of Daggers&Fire Shield can produce some hefty damage without me rolling my int at all... and I'll have mirror image, shield & blink... Polymorph...

there are some great possibilities for a melee spellcaster as long as you aren't limited to abj/evo.

Honestly, I think EK should have gotten transmutation with the choice of abjurtation or conjuration evocation. Many, many spells for transmutation are extactly the kind of thing i expect an EK would want. Do people think that perhaps by getting standard access to these spells that the EK becomes to powerful in comparisions to battle master or champion, or even other combat classes like barbarians, who i consider their strongest competition for the straight up fighting man role.

I'm away from my books at the moment but can't EKs pick up a few spells from any school? If I recall correctly, at level 3 they get 3 spells 2 of which must be from abjuration/evocation while the 3rd can be from any school. So while they focus on abj/evo they are still able to splash a few spells from other schools to round out their selection.

Yes, they can.  You don't have to MC Wizard in order to pick up Haste.

Why not Bard? Action Surge & Additional HP. Bards don't have the nova potential or close combat survivability that a Fighter/Abjurer will.

Why not straight EK? Mostly for 2nd-level spell slots. I'm assuming that my first level spell slots will be used by Shield (in Melee) or Magic Missile (Out of Melee) and my first unrestricted-school choice is Find Familiar. My third level spell slots will be used by Haste, which is also unrestricted by school. However... my second level spell choices are: Invisibility, Blur, Cloud of Daggers, Mirror Image, Magic Weapon, Spider Climb, See Invisibility, Levitate... those are some really awesome spells that aren't Abj/Evo and I could pick them up for relatively little cost by taking 3 wizard levels. Then once I've got 3 levels.... why not get more? There's a whole world of spells available and I've already lost the 4th "extra attack". The only other option I have for my second level slots is up-casting Magic Missile... not a bad choice, but not great, either.

Anyway... the second level spell slots got me thinking about it and it's looking pretty good. The reason I posted the thread was so I could get opinions and help make up my mind.

Thanks everyone for the replies.
