#1 Deius1022 May 16, 2015 16:52:05	This seems like a dumb question, but can Eldritch Knights use Arcane Focuses?  Each arcane class adds it as a class feature that they can, so I actually think maybe they can't.  I'm hoping that I'm wrong, since they would be handy.   Thank you   Deius

#4 Lord_Ventnor May 16, 2015 19:48:54	You could have your Eldritch Knight use a Quarterstaff as his primary weapon. It could be used as a Staff Focus and for pounding in people's faces.
#5 Undrhil May 17, 2015 0:02:04	Lord_Ventnor, unfortunately, that is not correct.  For one, the Eldritch Knight lacks any class feature which allows them to use an Arcane Focus for casting their spells.  Even taking a level of Wizard won't help since the spells the Eldritch Knight knows aren't considered part of it's Wizard class, but most DMs will likely hand wave that.  For two, the quarterstaff cannot be used as a Staff Focus.  On the other hand, a staff focus *can* be used as a Quarterstaff.  The difference?  The quarterstaff costs 1 sp, the arcane focus (staff) costs 5gp.    It also could matter for a PC Wizard who might want to take that arcane focus (staff), for whatever reason.

#11 Marandahir May 17, 2015 18:26:58	From the Eldritch Knight write-up in PHB (pg 74-75): "You learn two cantrips from the from the wizard spell list"   "You learn an additional wizard cantrip of your choice…" "You know three 1st-level wizard spells of your choice… on the wizard spell list"   "Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for your wizard spells, since you learn your spells through study and memorization… in addition, you use your Intelligence modifier when setting the saving DC for a wizard spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one." Highlighted the last one for emphasis. The rule, as written, is that the Eldritch Knight casts Wizard spells, and is treated as a Wizard for the sake of casting spells. Similarly, on page 114, under "Spellcasting Focus" for the Wizard class write-up: "You can use an arcane focus (found in chapter 5) as a spellcasting focus for your wizard spells." RAW is that you can use an arcane focus for your Eldritch Knight's wizard spells if you have 1 level in Wizard.
