Is it worth getting? |

Compared to the various "cloud" spells, it only allows a saving throw for the first application of damage. After a failed save, only an ability check performed as an action can break a creature free, and then they still have to contend with the difficult ground.
The Warlock's Hunger of Hadar spell is pretty similar thematically, although i think this one serves as a deadlier sleet storm - blocking all light, blinding creatures insight of its area, creating difficult terrain, and two types of damage, only one of which allows a saving throw.
It may be more "streamlined" than in previous editions, as it no longer tries to "attack" creatures but rather just forces a saving throw, similar to many other spells, but once the tentacles get a hold of something, they deal automatic damage to that creature until it can make an ability check.
If I were a Warlock with a Great Old One patron, I would be tempted to learn both spells, just because of their aesthetic, although they do overlap quite a bit. |
