Will be making a new character soon. Was wonder what peoples favorite class/race/sub-type combo for using bows. Or if you want to, list multiple and give pros and cons of both. How do you progress through levels and etc.

Thanks for any posts, this will help me decide what type of character to make.

Edit:

The reason I ask is because I find it difficult to pick this type of character. Any other role I want to play comes easily to mind for me, but this is the one I always feel indecisive about.

Right now, I am considering a Hunter Ranger 5/ War Cleric X bow build for play.

Obviously, starting with Ranger to get Extra Attack and the Sharpshooter Feat (if not human).  You get your Hunter's mark and your choice of Hunter damage buff (I like the +1d8 to wounded target once per turn, but the horde breaker would give an extra attack).

War Cleric gives you a bonus action attack when you are not applying Hunter's mark, Channel Divinity lets you hit with Sharpshooter better once per short rest.  You get more and better Spell distribution, and can up-cast Hunter's Mark sooner.

"bow" is not enough info.

do you want spells?  damage?  utility?

I'd probably pick birdman battlemasters / assassin with crossbow expertise + sharpshooter  + precision attack.

Flying, sneaky, sniper, who isn't hampered by close combat.

Cons would be the lack of any spells.

yeah flying bird guy who rains death upon the battlefield is a pretty crazy build  Multiple attacks, action surge, bonus action attack, precision attack..  So you would start fighter, MC into rogue up to asssassin, then go back to fighter?  Or pepper in the rogue levels so that you don't fall too far behind the fighter curve?

I'd go:

Fighter 1 OR Rogue 1 (depending if you want the CON proficiency or the net gain of an extra skill)

-> Fighter to 5 (you REALLY need to get to Lv. 5 in your main class ASAP, that's the big one, though 1 level behind if you went Rogue 1 is tolerable)

-> Rogue to 3 (Assassin)

-> the rest Fighter

Ranger5/Rogue5.  It doesn't matter a lot what order you take.  Ranger 5 is cool, but there are reasonable reasons to delay it a bit.

Then Battlemaster 3 or 4 (depending on if you want the ASI

Then rest Rogue

Vuman with Sharpshooter, or Wood Elf and grab Sharpshooter at 4th.

That Agonizing Blast survived errata while Evokers and Dragon Sorcerers didn't disgusts me to the core.

Ok Let's make help me narrow down my choices. I want a character with 3 levels of rogue for assassinate and expertise. I want a second attack, so I defeinatly need 5 levels in some other class. I want archery for +2 to attack. I'd probably want to be more consistent round to round damage, rather than all burst, though I would still want a tiny amount.

Nobody expects a Paladin to pull out a bow.  (I know from experience.)

PaladinX/Rogue2 gives you a hard-to hit guy who can speed in/out of whatever.  Make him a Wood Elf so you can shoot / hide every turn while outdoors.

To really mess up most DMs (whose encounters are infantry-o-centric), also give him Noble background, Mounted Combat feat, and a horse (later learn Find Steed)- you can emulate a Hun or Mongol or Cossack !

At Paladin6, only spellcasters and fellow archers will really bother you, and you can Save out of the worst of most spells.  (Highly-mobile Ancients Paladin7 nerfs spellcasters who engage him in artillery duels.)
