Feat or Ability Score Improvement?

Does anyone have any tips for when to pick which one? I only have the basic rules right now, but if I am reading correctly, you basically can choose either a feat or improve an ability score. Is this correct?

I am looking at a variant human fighter for my first character and I am confused if there is a good guideline to go by such as boost the atributes at 4, take a feat at 6 and so on.

So upon creation:

+1 Strength

+1 Constitution

+1 Skill

+1 feat

At level 4 you either pick a feat or +1 to two atts?

The questions I'm having are would it be best to bump the main atts up early, then choose feats afterwards? Will a lack of feats cause your character to be ... lame ,or vice versa? I'm sure I'm not seeing something yet, but it seems this will cause a lot of similar types of characters.

Unless there's a feat you really want, i'd improve your STR (or DEX if finesse or ranged weapons user) until reaching 20.

1: Take any feat you really want.

2: Get your attack stat to 20.

3: Take any feat that you want.

4: Even up any odd ability scores.

5: Boost Dex (light armor) or Con (heavy amor) with any remaining points.

6: If you still have room, take lucky.
