Feats: How many are you likely to actually take?

Bounded accuracy means you don't necessarilly have to boost your stats at each boost level, right?

What is the most likely number of feats for a character to take?

It seems unlikely most would take them at every stat bump, but 1-3, maybe?

1 maybe 2.  Resilence, and some kind of bonus action attack.

Maybe 3 with an armor one.

I haven't made many characters (about a dozen between those I've helped my players build for campaigns I intend to DM and the 2 I've built with intent to play myself), but so far all of those characters are only looking at taking 0, 1 or 2 feats.

Most seem aimed for 1 feat, with some Fighters planning for 2, and both a Monk and one Wizard aiming for 0.

It depends on class. Classes or subclasses with strong incentive to try getting two stats to 20 (e.g. Paladins, Monks, Barbarians, Rangers, Valor Bards, melee Clerics, Blade Warlocks) will probably only take 1 feat, or 2 if Variant Human.

Other classes which only really need one stat at 20 might try to sneak in another feat or two. Obviously, Fighters (and Rogues to a lesser extent) can just load up on feats if they want to.

My fighter, (Human, Eldritch Knight), build includes 4 feats: War Caster, Polearm Master, Sentinel, Great Weapon Master

I could see one including 5, (6 if human) if it only boosted its primary stat to 20.

Wrote a post about dumping your primary score on my blog.

I would rather consider how many feats your character actually wants to take in most cases. ;)

Monks are the only one i feel need to raise stats.

Mainly because with multi-attack it doesn't simply add +1 damage, it's +4 damage.  In addition to all the other Dex stuff like AC and missile defense.

Though i don't think they need to raise Wis.

Fighters need 20 for similar reasons, but they don't need to immidatly, and they get extra abi/feats anyways.

Warlocks should probably avoid taking too many as well, seeing as they desperately need to max their Cha and Dex(or Con). Most invocations are already 'feat-like' to begin with, so you get that same 'custom' feel from a warlock without a lot of feats.

Most builds have room for 1-3 feats, depending on your class (fighters will tend to have more, most classes with 5 Ability Increases will have 1 or none).

I'm setting up a paladin for HotDQ/RoT, my party opted to roll stats and I went variant human.

that said, I picked up Heavy Armor Master as my variant feat and I plan on picking up 1-2 additional feats. (Sentinel and Mounted Combatant)

I'll likely do Sentinel at 4 (I'm the party's primary "Defender/Tank")

Boost charisma at 8 (up to 18)

Feat or ASI at 12 (depends on how much I use a mount)

Boost charisma at 16 (up to 20)

If I was using the standard array I'd be more apt to go with the ASI

My Drow Two-Weapon Fighter/Bladelock will go after 2. Warcaster so I can cast spells with a weapon in hand (though with no action to sheeth a weapon, that's not an ASAP requirement) and Duelwielder for that hot rapier action.

I would like to find out just how important 20 in 2 stats is in 5e. With bounded accuracy hitting the absolute peak in ability scores/attack bonus doesn't seem quite so important. I suppose it'll take some high level play to learn just how much more stunted a character with 16 in their main stat is compared to one with 20. In 4th edition, you would cripple the **** out of yourself by doing that. In 3rd edition not as much but still very important.
