So, I am finally getting to play some DnD instead of DM'ing. I am wanting to play a variant human, with crossbow feat. I am starting at 1st with a fighter.  When should I start multi classing with rogue?  I am wanting only 3rd level rogue for the assassin. With figher I am going to use battlemaster.

Thanks for the advice.

Something to keep in mind is the scope of your campaign, like how many levels will it (realistically) go on for. 1st-3rd? 1st-7th? Plan with that length in mind.

Number crunching: Dex first, and that's just damage, not mentioning Initiative, AC and whatnot.

My answer: Whichever you feel like.

As to when to MC: Don't worry about delaying Extra Attack, Crossbow Expert will pick up the slack. Personally I'd go Fighter 1/Rogue 4.

If it was my pick I would go level 1 fighter level 3 rogue and then put the rest into fighter.

At levels 2-4 this build should feel really strong in combat

At level 5 it is mechanically comparable to most every full class build you could come up with.

From level 6-7 it will be a little weaker than a build that progressed by going 5 fighter and then rogue levels.

At level 8 those 2 builds will be identical.

Personally, I'd take the really strong in combat in lower levels 2-4 than a little stronger in levels 6 and 7.  Especially since that version also gets better out of combat skills as well.

I was thinking maybe fighter 1, then rogue 1, then 2 more fighter levels. That gives you battle master with trip.  1st attack  trip them, 2nd attack you have advantage and can use your sneak attack.
