So, I was playing a Monk and due to a series of unfortunate events, he died last game. I was pretty bummed... I need to make a new character, but would appreciate any help. The character will be 4th level, all of 5e PHB is allowed, including variant human. We currently have: Dragonborn Paladin (Oath of Vengeance) Halfling Rogue Dwarf Knowledge Cleric High Elf Wizard 1/Druid 3 Wood Elf Ranger (archery focused) I was thinking about playing something we don't have, or a second Cleric. Some of my group have suggested a front line character, but I'm open to any ideas. So, any advice folks?

If it were me, I'd go for a druid or barbarian with that group.

You already have a cleric, druid, and paladin so another cleric seems unnecessary. You also have a paladin for front line. What you don't have is an arcane caster because that player is MC. Druid / wizard might do it depending on later build plans but a sorcerer migh be an idea, or a full wizard or warlock or bard built like arcane offensive casters. If the group really wants more cleric then bard would let you mix both roles a bit and also add more skill benefits. I would consider a fighter if you want front line and a bard if you want another caster / healer.

A battlemaster fighter might suit you well, they're versatile and formidable. I agree that a barbarian would also be a good addition to this party.

a bard could just be a JoaT and help out where ever seems to need to be bolstered

dwarf fighter for front line duty, that +2 con will help keep ya alive longer and no mater what type (hill or mountain) you get a helpfull bonus or if you want to go more support, sorcerer or warlock.  but it is ultimately up to you.  My front line guy at the moment is a hill dwarf barbarian built for max HP, he gets 9-20 hp a level.

I would suggest:

- Support: Bard (valor) for versatility and buffs,

- Range: Sorcerer (draconic) for twin spells (haste) and elemental damage

- Frontline: Fighter (Battle Master) because you have a rogue in your party (commander's strike is awesome with a rogue).

I'd say go Eldritch Knight for front line survivability and magical flexibility.

Thanks for the helpful replies everyone! I'm thinking that I'm going to go with barbarian, maybe fighter. Would it be worth it to multiclass at this point, or should I wait until later levels, or should I just keep the single class?

If I go barbarian, I'll go with totem warrior. If I go fighter, battle matter.

My friend and I joined a game this weekend. He played a human barbarian with Polearm Master, wielding a halberd. He laid down some superb damage thanks to well-timed rage, Polearm Master's bonus action attack, and good use of Reckless Attack. Even though he was in the thick of it most of the day, he hardly took a scratch. That was at lvl 2, we leveled up to 3 by the end of the session. Next time he'll have the Wolf totem, granting the rest of us advantage. It was a very solid class in actual play, he was very happy with his contribution to the group.

Is the general consensus that a barbarian should go with a polearm and polearm mastery to really kick out the damage?  I've been trying to look around at the various guides, and that seems like the way to go.  So a question, if I go Barbarian 4 and decide to use a Glaive, I'll take Polearm Mastery at first level (as a variant human) and then should I take a +2 STR improvement at 4th, or Great Weapon Master?

Great Weapon Master is best left for later in the game when your Strength modifier and proficiency bonus start off-setting the accuracy loss.

Wow, thanks for the great and thoughtful responses. I think I'll wait on gwm until later levels. My character concept is that he is the brother of my monk who became a naginata-wielding sohei rather than a monk. His "rage" is actually periods of empty-mindedness where he simply allows his training and instincts to take over. He was contacted by the spirit of his brother so that he might help his brother's companions fulfill their destiny.

Sounds like a fun concept.
