ok so I have table top'd before but never D&D. my GM however has done D&D but its been a long long time. with the coming out of 5e we have decided to start up a group. 5e looks fun!

anyway I was wanting to create a character and was looking at the 5e core rulebook classes, and wasnt sure what my character would actually be, and not having played D&D before I was wondering if some of you veteran players might be able to help with that.

I was wanting to create a catacter with more or less the Ranger class. Bow weilding as well as skilled with a sword but not a fighter or Paladin barbarian caracter. more leather armor and whatnot. anyway. I wanted a draconic heritage. I noticed the sworcer has that as part of the archtype but I dont want a sorcerer.

basically what I am wanting my character to be able to do is have a passive ability that ads a bit of frost damage to the weapons he uses based of the magic of his draconic bloodlines, ie: frost arrows and frost damage with sword, but im not sure how to build it.

Thank you for all your help!

What level will you start and will you begin with any magic items? Also would the DM be open to work something with you?

The concept of an ranger infusing its attacks with cold damage could easily be made, depending on what your DM allows. The ranger will release in the PHB this month and the magic items in the DMG later in november. You could build a ranger and have a Ioun Stone of draconic origin letting you add cold damage to your attacks for exemple;

IounStone*

Wondrous Item

Icy Blue Prism (Rare): Your attacks deal 1d6 extra cold damage.

*Item homebrewed on the fly since many different Ioun stones exist, it would work fine for your concept i think.

the DM will be more than willing to work with me. as for starting level, it will be low, probably absolutly no higher than 3. but I imagine would like to start everyone at 1 or 2. and I will look into the lounStone as well. thank you for that idea.. any other ideas you might have will be fantastic too! im pretty new to the D&D univers aside from a few forgotten realms novels and a few old school baulders gate and icewindale video games haha..

How I would handle this as a DM is to explore whether everyone else playing in the game would like a similarly potent heritage for their character or not.

If yes, then I would simply decide as to how much of a boost each heritage (whether different sorts of dragon, or your character having a draconic heritage while others had heritage of others sorts like ogre magi, or medusae, or fey or whatever) would be allowed to grant - in the case of draconic heritage I'd grant darkvision and probably allow a choice between either having resistance to the associated type of damage (i.e. cold resistance for a silver or white dragon ancestor) or being able to imbue your weapon attacks with +1d6 damage of appropriate type.

If the rest of the players didn't want to have "potent heritage", I would provide the same benefits as above, but would either reduce the number of magic items your character could attune to 2, or would require you to spend a feat to gain the benefits, at your choice.

If there is no problem waiting for the Player's Handbook I would suggest that you have a look at making a Dragonborn Ranger and then work with your DM to modify that if it looks close to what you want (e.g. changing the breath weapon to infusing the arrows or similar).
