I'm putting this out there to get some fun ideas of what to do with this awesome spell. Here are some things I've already thought up:
Cling and burn: The target believes they're on fire. Simple damage every round, done.
The Nicholas Cage Cage: The target believes they're surrounded by a swarm of incredibly vicious bees that keep biting and stinging them. again damage every round, possibly with distraction benefits too.
Summon monster: Not interested in wasting a high level slot to summon a creaure to harrass your enemy? No reason they can't think you've done so! once again it deals reliable damage, plus with luck it will eat a couple of attacks before the enemy realizes something's up. |

I love the spell too and as a DM I would encourage an illusionist to use it in a variety of ways for lots of effect.
Foe struggles with acid webs that hinder and burn.
A earthen hand sprouts from the ground and grabs the foes foot squeezing and keeping him rooted to the spot.
The way I look at it, as long as the foe fails its save, it imagines the worst and will continue to struggle with the illusion until the illusion is broken. |

this way you deal 1d6 psychic damage everyone round AND he's paralyzed so your ally got advantage on attack and do automatic critical hit on him. Few creature got high intellect (don't use it on wizards lol)
Great against those stupid brute who normally kill you with one weapon swing (bugbear, ogre, beast, most unaligned creature etc...) |
