| #1melloredOct 01, 2014 8:28:28 | A barbarian drops off an ornate chest in front of the keep and retreates and watches the gates. A guard comes to check it out. He pauses for a moment, and then calls an all clear, picking up the chest and bringing it inside. "This chest is mine!" he shouts, as he shuts the gates behind him. Soon the shouts of battle and discord can be heard from behind the walls.
A few hours later a bloodied soldier opens the gates and flashes a signal. The barbarian strolls up and sees everyone inside dead, the whole palce simply turned on each other. The barbarian yawns, "I don't know you talk me into this, i don't get any action." The guard smiles, "It was just a suggestion". He then slits his own throat falling lifeless. The barbairan picks up the chest, carrying it to the next castle.
the build
Gnome Lore Bard 11 / Paladin 6. *Assuming you can retrain Magic Secrets, otherwise bard 14. Bump Cha to 20. Magic Secrets: Magic Jar, Death Ward. Contingency. Spells: Mass suggestion, Confusion, and such. Expertise in bluff just to sell it.
Finish off with 3 levels of
Get a large sturdy (mitheral) container, big enough to hold a gnome. And an ally (or 2) with low Cha who can carry it. Barbarians or fighters are good. Mass suggestion to keep them around. Cast Magic Jar. Cast Deathward on your body, every 8 hours. Cast Contingency -> Raise dead every 10 days. Dominate people who are nearby, but stay within 100'.
Use your ally to come out and cast spells as needed. Or in case of diplomacy.
If your host dies, you roll.... 1d20+5Cha+6Prof+5Cha vs 8DC+5Cha+6Prof Or 16 vs 18 with advantage.
That's 1 in 400 chance to die. With deathward, it's 1 in 1600 dead hosts.
If you can manage +1 more, say from bless, you can dominate indefinatly.
You can add sorcerer 3 to heighten magic jar. Letting you dominate much easier. Or Distant, to give you some more room to manuver. Or if your bard 14, use contingency -> teleport if someone breaks the jar. |

Dude that's evil. Nice!
On the Magic Secrets thing, do we really think a lot of DMs will forbid retraining? They're considered bard spells. You can retrain bard spells. Seems kind of cut and dried that you can upgrade your poached content as you level. But maybe that's just me. |

| #7HeirRaktusOct 01, 2014 12:41:54 | Ha! Good fun! |
| #8TimboramaOct 01, 2014 13:28:40 | By RAW you cannot retrain magical secrets. Well, you can, but you can't.
The spells you choose as your Magical secrets become Bard spells, and you can retrain Bard spells. Awesome! But wait, you can't retrain into anything that's not a Bard spell...sooooooo...
Also, I don't think Distant Spell works with Magic Jar, unless that's not what you meant?
(But! It's good to see the reveal of what you've been hinting at all morning. So awesome! I now have a BBEG who has "mysterious packages" arrive at castles before they go down. I think I'll name him Mello Red...) |

| #10HeirRaktusOct 01, 2014 13:40:18 | Is Gnome just for the size? Halflings are smaller with the same weight. |
| #11ClutchboneOct 01, 2014 14:06:56 | Gnome gives you advantage on the Charisma save for Magic Jar.
Excellent idea, BTW. |
| #12melloredOct 01, 2014 14:36:00 | gnome was also neccicary for my 4e version. but, yea, advantage. doen't matter if you go wizard though so halfling is fine. |
| #13melloredOct 02, 2014 6:21:42 | Simulacrum in a jar....
That's a good reason to go bard 14. |

| #18HeirRaktusOct 02, 2014 8:58:20 | Aura of Protection? So it's one of those 'only works in the end game' builds... I follow now. Still pretty imaginative. Why you are one of my fave builders! |

| #20TimboramaOct 02, 2014 10:47:35 | When it comes to having 2 paladin buddies, personally, I'd say the same ability can't stack with itself (like having 2 Shields of Protection cast on you by 2 Clerics), even if from another source. But that's just me! Otherwise you pay a bunch of money to some low level clerics and go find the tarrasque...
(there are probably easy exceptions to this, but a general "no" on a case-by-case basis) |
