What happens to the elemental, when a golem is destroyed?
I guess it depends on the setting. Also on how strong is the elemantal needed for creating the golem. If its a powerful golem you could roll to see if its angry and just goes crazy attacking, could make a mild golem encounter into a dangerous double duel. Or you might make a friend, depending on how intellegent your elemantal on is. I havent read anything about golem creation. From a DM's view you could have some real story fun with it.
Setting dependant, but the elemental soul, just like a humanoids, ascends to another plane. It probably goes to its home plane
Or it just dies. Don't read too much into it

I like cowleymen's idea, but I would only use it if I gave the PC's hints (beware the double guardian) first.
Personally, I see three possibilities.
1. The elemental is destroyed along with its container.
2. The elemental is banished to its home plane.
3. The elemental is freed from its prison, but still remains on the current plane of existence.
Depends on the DM/setting/what would be coolest at the time.
An especially interesting question for Eberron, where many magical devices are powered by bound elementals.
