Got concept and combo, but what class?

Greetings and salutations!

One of the things I've always liked a lot in DnD is making interesting and tasteful "combos". Preferably things that have a little bit of an oddball and unusual flavor to it (Dex Paladins, 4e Teleport Barbarians, that sorta thing).

So the one idea that currently has me pondering is the Mirror Image + Sentinel thing. Or, in general, an illusionist kind of "tank", a phantom blade. What're the board's thought on the combo, if it's viable, and what class combination it would work best with?

I think I'd go with a Lore Bard. You can go Dex / Cha, where the dex boosts the AC of your images. Cutting Words can be used to alter attack rolls to cause them to miss your images, and you can use darkness to grant disadvantage to all attack rolls in an area. Oh, and it's a full caster so plenty of spell slots. It could prove a solid foundation for your Phantom Blade.

I'm currently trying to create a "Warlord" via Paladin class features.  My guy's spells will play out at table as "inspiring speeches and slogans".  If he loses Concentration on a spell, it's because somebody hit him in the stomach and knocked the breath out of him.

The point: Be willing to re-fluff something that acts mechanically about like what you want to achieve, but the description doesn't match what you imagined.

I agree. Which is exactly why I'm asking for class suggestions, since it's not the fluff that's the problem. The core idea is Mirror Image + Sentinel (Wether that combo works or not) to create a mirage/illusion based melee fighter, a clever tank of sorts, and I'm asking what classes are best to mechanically complement this, rather than what supports it fluff wise. Since it's a simple combination, and many classes have illusion and dodgey features, I was a bit overwhelmed with options.

That aside, at my local game groups, bards have to sing. Personally I dislike it, but that's one point I'm afraid I can't re-fluff! Cutting Words looks interesting, but does Bard really have that much going for it compared to Warlock (Incantations), Wizard (Full caster progression and illusion goodies) and EK (Fighter goodies)?

Trickster cleric seems a legit option

Paladin smites burn a spell slot to use, so that whole trick may not work very many times per day.

Also, as I read Sentinel, the whole trick will only trigger if the original incoming attack hits a duplicate.  If it hits you, nothing else can happen.  And this uses up your reaction too.

When it does go off it should be awesome and fun, but tactical considerations may get in the way of the theory.

Trickster cleric get's a duplicate at 2. They also have nicer OA's. though not as nice as rogues. you could also reflavor healing as a illusionary damage (I.e. cure wound = that wound was really a miss, i just made it look like he was hurt, see he has full HP.). Could be at least part of it.
