I'm building a Goliath Lore Bard who's main tasks will be healing for my group/ crowd control / buff/debuff. I want this character to also be a grappler. My questions begin with the Bards spellcasting focus. -Can I use a one handed instrument as the spell casting focus for my Bard spells while I'm grappling. -If I cast a concentration spell. Do I have to roll that while I'm grappling. (I know I do if I take damage)

you can use a 1 handed focus. grappling does not affect concentration. that said, i suggest valor bard, or somehow get armor. standing next to an enemy without AC is going to be painful.

either that or valor. multi'attack gives you 2 chances to grab, or prone. which is better then burning your insperation dice. though you can use cutting words to defend yourself.

Cutting words and the extra two out of class spells are what really make me like college of lore. But that means I have to get better AC else where. Or I'll basically be killing myself by grappling. And that's where I seem to run into problems. I'm not sure which way to go. I obviously want to be a strength based bard for the grappeling. But to increase AC It seems better to stick with medium armor, which makes it seem silly to MC when I could just go CoV

To fix the AC on a Bard, there's a couple ways. Man, you two should've read Mellored's guide ;)

1. Mountain Dwarf, they start with Medium Armor

2. Begin your adventuring career as a Life Cleric. They get heavy armor at lv1, and will dramatically help your healing spells.

3. Human Variant, using the feat to gain proficiency in Med Armor and... I think you get Shield proficiency from that, too.
