| #1NytramJun 13, 2015 7:01:05 | My group is about to convert our level 4 party from Pathfinder to 5e in the wake of watching Critical Role and seeing what a great system it is. Critters ftw!
My PF character was a Magus with more of a martial/AC focus so I figured Eldritch Knight is the best choice for the flavour I'm going for. The starting proficiencies for the fighter and my characters back story don't really fit together so I have decided that he would have started his career as a Wizard and then pursued the martial side of things. He will probably revisit Wizardly training for Abjuration or Evocation tradition at some point ending up with 2 Wizard levels and the rest EK.
So we start up with a Wiz 1/EK 3. For the life of me I can't figure out how my spellcasting will work here.
According to the multiclass spellcaster table I would be classed as a level 2 caster receiving 3 level 1 spell slots. EK knows spells inherently and doesn't use a spellbook but the Wizard uses it to prepare his spells. How many of my 3 spell slots do I need to prepare and how many do I have locked in as known inherently?
I'm also not sure how many cantrips I will have. Wizard 1 states:
and then EK 3 states:
Does this mean I learn 2 more when EK3 hits or does the highest base amount apply and its just a difference in language used?
Also Ritual casting...The Spellbook section states this:
Will I technically be gaining Wizard spell slots from my EK progression for the purposes of this?
It's a lot of questions I know but I have scoured the web looking for answers and I've found nothing specific enough to explain it enough. Thanks to anyone that can help. |

As an EK, you Know 3 1st level spells (2 are Abj or Evo) As a wizard, you have 6 1st level spells in your spell book. Each day you can Prepare 4 of them (3+1)
You now have a pool of 7 spells that you can cast today. (3 known, 4 prepared)
You have the Spell Slots of a 2nd level caster, so you have 3 1st level spell slots. You may use one of those slots to cast any of your 7 available spells. This means you can cast 3 different spells once each, or you can cast the same spell 3 times throughout the day.
Now, lets look into the future. You now have a 20 Int. You are Wiz1/EK11, and you have found 10 more 1st level wizard scrolls to put into your spellbook. (Since only Wiz1, you can't enter or prepare any 2+ spells)
As an EK, you know 8 spells all of 1st or 2nd level. (6 are Abj or Evo) As a Wizard, you have 16 spells in your book, and can Prepare 6 of them (5+1)
You now have a pool of 14 spells that you can cast today. (8 known, 6 prepared)
You have the Spell Slots of a 4th level caster, so 4 1st level slots, and 3 2nd level slots. You can use those to cast any of your available (known or prepared) spells. Again, in any combination. (Caveat: can upcast, but not downcast. Level 1 spells can use a slot1 or slot2. Level 2 spells need slot2, never slot1.
Now lets look a bit more into the future. Nothing has changed excelpt now Wiz1/EK12.
All the spell stuff stays the same, except...
You have the spell slots of a 5th level caster. So 4/3/2. Which means you have 3rd level slots, but no 3rd level spells. Those 3rd level slots can only be used to 'upcast' a 1st or 2nd level spell, since you don't (and can't) know or prepare any 3rd level spells.
Hope that helps.
Oh, the Cantrips add, so wiz1/EK3 means you have 5 cantrips. Wiz1/EK11 means you have 6 cantrips.
