| #1another1Sep 11, 2014 2:16:55 | Hi everyone, I'm gonna start playing 5th edition soon, I've been playing since AD&D. I like optimized but still playable and enjoyable character (not necessarly for DPS) but since I never played 5th I could use some help. The basic Idea is fighter 11 rogue 9 dual wielder handcrossbow, starting with fighter for constitution and strengh saves proficiency. Urchin Background for thieves tools proficiency. Variant human with str 12 con 14 dex 15 int 10 wis 14 cha 8 (+1 dex and con already included) feat resilience (dexterity) (so it starts with 16 dex and i have proficiency in all the main saves except wisdom). skill: acrobatic, perception, athletic + stealth and sleght of hand from urchin. feat i am considering: crosbow expert and sharpshooter
after lvl 1 i really don't know how i should level, i think i need at least 1 lvl of rogue for traps skills soon. so something like fighter-rogue-fighter till lvl 6 then rogue till lvl 3 then fighter till 11 and finishing with rogue. I also think of going champion for crit madness and half proficiency to initiative checks, or is battlemaster better?
My biggest doubt are: lacking darkvision will be a big problem? should i go forest elf then? (also i don't like halfling so that is not an option) should I start as a rogue and gran resilience (wisdom) later on? as a ranged character i don't know how many con saves i'll have to make how soon should i grab those feats? when i get disguise tools from assassin, since i already have that proficiency, can i choose another one?. should i go fighter 12 rogue 8? the lvl 9 assassin feature is not that good so it's about +1d6 or 1 feat/ability score from fighter or eveng going fighter 15 rogue 5 since lvl 6-8 only gives +1 d6 and evasion (i saw there is a ring with evasion tho and i can use uncanny dodge 1/round to halve damage if i fail the save) those 3 lvl fighter gives me +1crit range +1 indomitable uses. I really like uncanny dodge so lvl 5 rogue is prolly a must. I pretty sure i am missing a lot so you could enlight me.
thanks in advance and sorry for my bad english

Your first feat should be whichever one of the previous you didn't take. Then take Resilience to bump Dex to an even number if you want the proficiency, then just flat out +2 to Dex. You take Rogue to 9 for the extra sneak attack die.
As for leveling, it depends on how early you want/need Rogue. If you want/need Rogue early, start with Crossbow Expert (more attacks = more chances to hit = more chances to apply Sneak Attack), start with Fighter and level them as you feel like. Be sure to be a Battle Master though, you're going to want manuevers like Precision Attack (better chance to hit = better chance to apply Sneak Attack). Goading Attack and Distracting Strike can also work well considering you're at range. |

Wood elf is good if your going to try and maximize and stealth and burst damage (i.e. assassinate + battlemaster die + action surge = deadly). Otherwise i suggest human with eldrich knight and arcane trickster. |

So it's battlemaster that better than champion? I already have +2 to hit from archery and multiple attacks, shouldn't I be able to hit at least once? also expanded crit provides auto-hit, more sneack attack damage and half proficiency to initiative should grant me more assassinate. With battlemaster, if i read it right, I only get 4(maybe 5) dice per short rest so something around 0-2 dice/encounter. I can see that burst damage being very strong but for the rest of the encounter i don't get anything (right?) except for probably all the aggro
I'll keep looking closer to battlemaster tho.

| #6another1Sep 11, 2014 7:43:38 | Isn't improved critical a lvl 3 champion ability? (the real question here is if there will be keen weapons) anyway i was missing the fact that you can use the dice after you roll, thank you very much for the info.

| #7YunruSep 11, 2014 7:53:26 | Yes I should of been clearer, by not going beyond 11 you don't get more than a +5% chance to crit. Which, when compared to ensuring a hit, pales in comparison. |
| #8Mommy_was_an_OrcSep 11, 2014 8:02:10 | When you have Advantage(Assassin), go first, and make 5-7 attacks(Action Surge, Extra Attack) - it isn't too hard to wait until the 2nd to last attack to see if you confirm a crit. At which point, you double your sneak damage. |
