Help me pick my first 5e character

I played a barbarian in the playtest; my group will be starting Tyranny of Dragons next monday. Here are the characters I am considering:

 

  • Dante- tiefling lore bard w/ sage background who went to the darkside (MC warlock)
  • Sage- wood elf druid w/ hermit background, may MC into divination wizard or nature cleric (shaman-witchdoctor-greenseer)
  • Boone- human ranger w/ outlander background, trophy hunter w/ favored enemy- monstrosities. 
  • Slash- half orc ranger w/ urchin background, believes in reincarnation
  • Aegis- high elf eldritch knight w/ created background [heretic], may MC transmuter wizard for some movement and crafting stuff

Insights? Revelations?

Go with your gut instinct, and just play the one that screams to you the loudest.

 

The amount of choices in the PHB is staggering.   When I opened the book and made my first PC, I started coming up with a handful of concepts and I had to put blinders on so that I could focus and get one made.

 

I love how each class plays and feels very different.   I really think that some people are just more interested in playing specific styles so it is very hard to pick for someone else.  

 

To me, the traits, ideals, bounds and flaws really help me make the most out of any PC.

I haven't fleshed out the Heretic yet. I was going to use Acolyte as a template and create sort of the opposite of it. Trouble is,  I can't think of a positive feature for heretic.

Are you going for the active heretic who tries to bring down the ex-god, or the passive one that just got sick of/felt betrayed by/etc the tenets of the ex-god?

Basically he rejects that arcane magic is controlled by the gods and maintains that all arcane magic flows from planes such as Shadowfell, Feywild, Elemental Planes, Pos/Neg etc. Divine magic may be the purview of the gods but arcane magic comes from elsewhere.
