Hey everyone!

In prepping for the next time I get to be a player instead of a DM, I want to figure out how to make this character I had in 3E. We had started at 5th level, so the original backstory wouldn't work so well in a level 1 game, but here goes:

Cain was the second son of a tribal chieftain, and his birth came with a terrible omen. The tribe's shaman said that Cain would be the downfall of his father. His father couldn't simply kill his son, so he left him outside of a monastery, thinking that the monks would raise him to be weak. Cain grew up never knowing his father or tribe, only knowing that he was different than the other acolytes around him.

Cain trained as a monk as he grew up. Eventually, he stopped getting better. He saw his friends' skills improving around him, but his were going no where. This made him mad. He started to get into fights. Then they threw him out. In game terms, his alignment drifted away from Lawful and he stopped being able to level as a monk.

Chewing through his backlog of xp in the wild, Cain quickly honed his anger and his combat ability. He grew mighty and fearsome. He took the bear as his totem, and even trained to wrestle against those bears.

Eventually, he went on to become a bear warrior, a 3E PrC that let him shapechange into a bear when he was in a rage.

So, how could I build him in 5E? My simplest idea is to simply make him a human barbarian, take the tavern brawler feat, and a monk-ish background. Any multiclassing is going to weaken him, and I'm not sure where the monk and barbarian could synergize.

Moon Druid 2+ gets a Bear form.

Monk 1 adds into the attack abilities.

Barbarian 3+ gets more "Bear" abilities

Sure that'll work.

Personally I prefer Barb 6 Eagle for scouting.

The other things Moon can do feeds into this.

Yeah, go for it.

Moon druid doesn't seem like it will help, because that bear form's attack and damage won't increase. Grappler is nice for the pins, but tavern brawler would let me skip monk levels entirely even though I really want them. I might see if I can trade unarmored defense for something, as it won't stack with the barbarian's.
