However, I'd like to avoid going Fire if I can, and still have it be a viable choice. Fire is mostly straight damage. With Dragon, I can do damage and some control (especially going Cold). However, isn't Fire the most commonly resisted/immune? And the Cold selection is fairly limited. And yet, why do any Controlling at all with Cold when I can just pick Fire and kill them faster... I also gave Lightning consideration, but there isn't a long ranged cantrip option for them. Party is a melee fighter, Archer Ranger (going Paladin if things go south) and me. Our DM spreads healing potions out in the loot, no worries there. |

Some of the cold spells are powerful, too, like Cone of Cold, which is bad news for every enemy with less constitution (and therefore less hps). Ice Knife is a nice AoE at the lower levels and Frostbite brings some debuff, if things start to mix up too much. If you get the 'Spell Sniper' feat or 'Far Spell" metamagic (or both), you get the disadvantage of short range cantrips out of the way. |

If I'm correct, a Cold Sorcerer gets Frostbite, Ray of Frost, Chromatic Orb, Ice Knife. That's a good start. Then the only Cold spells before level 5 spells is Snilloc's Snowball Storm, at level 2, and Ice Storm, which is... Underwhelming. Very underwhelming. Then it's Cone of Cold, which rules. After that, the only spell to do guaranteed Cold damage is Investiture of Ice (prismatic spray is random). So really, taking a look at that... It's possible. But I'd go as far to say as its suboptimal at best. Cold just can not compete with Fire just yet. Or am I missing something? |
