Help my Warlock make useful reactions

Hi members of the board,

Lurker, first post here. Awesome information you guys have assembled! I am a new player in Dungeons and Dragons, so I'm looking for a bit of assistance.

Now, I have a Warlock build fleshed out (Eldritch Blast spamming - Fiend patron, pact of the Tome), and was wandering if there was a way to use my 'reaction'-action during combat for added damage, toughness or mobility?

I feel that my action is already covered with Eldritch Blast spam and the occasional spell, though most of those I'm planning to take has uses outside of combat as well. Also, the bonus action looks covered as well with casting and re-targeting of hex. Heck, casting Shillelagh is also a possibility.

Looking through the spells, I only noticed three spells with cast time of a reaction: Feather Fall, Shield and Hellish Rebuke. Now, the last one is on the Warlock Spell list and should probably be picked up as it opens up for reactions, but it seems a little lackluster given the few spell slots available, even though it's probably at its best with my fiend patron.

I know various feats could grant an easier time setting up reactions such as Defensive Duelist, Sentinel or Mage Slayer, but I'd rather pick up War Caster, Resilient (Con) or Alert I reckon. Multiclassing for reactions is another possibility, put I'd prefer to keep it to a strict Warlock if possible, or at least pick up another class post level 9.

So, outside of setting up opportunity attacks with 'Command' or casting Hellish Rebuke, do your average Fiend Patron Warlock have other means of using the reaction?

Cheers!

Reactions are just that, reacting to a specific set of criteria. If X happens then I can do Y. Fall off a bridge, cast feather fall. Charmed town guard hits me, I burn them to a crisp (I'm looking at you Mike Mearls).

It's not meant to be an integral part of the normal player movement/action turn.

I am well aware what a reaction is and how they are used. Perhaps I should have been a bit more specific.

I am looking for more ways to trigger a reaction from my character.

Certain feats, abilities or spells allow your character to make a reaction, to do something when they normally can't, either resulting in them doing more damage or having superior defensive stats. Polearm Master, Defensive Duelist and Shield being three such things. I was looking for similar features for my Warlock.

The War Caster feat lets you make opportunity attacks with spells. That can be very nasty with eldritch blast. At high levels, you can shoot 4 beams and push the target up to 40 feet. I can't think of any other class that can do something like that at-will with an opportunity attack.

I don't know if you played 4e, but I know well that reactions were very much a part of action-economy optimization. In 5e, not so much. I would just focus on learning spells that can be used as reactions (e.g. Hellish Rebuke, Shield, Feather Fall, etc.). You'll do just fine with EB+AB+Hex in the combat department.

For the booklock, the reaction options are pretty slim, as a lot of the reaction options are based around melee attacks.   War caster lets you use a spell, but that's for OA only - which you're going to get as a reaction for any class/race/character anyway.   Creating them is going to be tough without a more melee focus (bladelock) or mutliclassing.  HTH.

I think you covered all the main ones.  Reactions are fairly rare.

Note that you don't have to cast command/dissonant whispers.  Allies can do that for you.

Likewise, you can generate OA's for allies.

Also, nothing stops you from using defensive dualist.  Grab a dagger and your set.

it does not, but disavantage makes it not too hot. not neccicarally worth the spell slot and feat. though you might as well try if you have the oppertunity
