I have a new 5th ed player joining one of the games I am running that hasn't played since 3.5. He has heard about compatability with 5th edition for the purposes of updating older characters and wants to update a lvl 8 Green Dragon Shaman that he never got to finsih playing because his play group at the time stopped meeting. I'd love to give him the opportunity to play this class, but I honestly know very little about it and I don't own the book it came in (I think the second phb for 3.5 is what he said).

Yeah, Dragon Shaman is in the 3.5 Player's Handbook II.

I would convert it as a Paladin Oath.

Green Dragon Shaman

  • Channel Divinity features would be the Life Cleric's Preserve Life and breath weapon as a Dragonborn.
  • Green Dragon Shaman Spells: 3rd charm person, cure wounds, 5th - suggestion, beast sense, 9th - plant growth, water breathing, 13th - hallucinatory terrain, blight, 17th - tree stride, dominate person
  • 7th level - Immunity to poison damage and poisoned condition
  • 15th level - Supreme Healing (as Life Cleric)
  • 20th level - Dragon Wings (as Sorcerer)

I recommend swapping out the level 7 perks as paladin already gets immunity to poison.  maybe advantage/immunity to charming and/or illusion magic, or the same when casting charm/illusion magic instead

Barbarian – Dragon Shaman

3rd –  Select your dragon totem. You gain the breath weapon and energy resistance of that dragon type, as a Dragonborn of your level. In addition, you gain the spells known and spells per day of an Eldritch Knight. You may select your spells from the Druid class list. Your spellcasting ability is Charisma.

6th – You gain the Lay on Hands feature of the Paladin.

10th – You gain immunity to the energy type of your dragon totem.

14th – You gain the ability to cast commune or commune with nature once per day without material components.

20th – You gain wings that allow you to fly at your base land speed.

The 20th level feature is because I don't give Barbarians the Primal Champion ability at 20th; I'm still working on replacements for the Berserker and Totem Warrior.

I'm likening what most of you have made but I think we're missing something important. In 3.5 the dragon shamans biggest thing was that it gave you a breath weapon of a true dragon. Which in 3.5 meant it recharged in d4 rounds. This was in contrast to the half-dragon template, or nearly evey other thing that gave you a breath weapon, which was only once per day. So if your going to convert it over it should at probably stay as such and be recharge 5-6.

It it also never gave spell casting, but instead passive auras, something like warlock invocations seems to be the closest in mechanics. Except that on the shaman it effected everyone in range.

Other big things it gave where natural armor bat increased with level, which I'm not sure how it would convert over. And NATURAL nonmagical flight. Now this actually came really late for most of it to be useful as it wasn't til 19th level. But it not relying on a spell/item bars mentioning

Also I swear I read something about wizards putting out free PDFs for  make-your-own conversions from both 4e and 3.5.

Agreed, the breath weapon would recharge on 5-6, like a true dragon.

Taking a crack at fitting it into an Oath chassis

Oath of the Dragon (Green)

Level 3 Features

-Breath Weapon(Green): Channel Divinity (1 total/short rest)As an action you may use breath weapon as a dragonborn of the corresponding color.

-Frightful Presence: Channel Divinity (1 total/short rest). As an action, you may exude the presence of a dragon to terrify enemies within 15ft. Targets must succeed a wisdom saving throw or be frightened for one turn.

-Oath Spells: 3rd: Charm person, Fog Cloud 5th: Suggestion, Mirror Image  9th: Hypnotic Pattern, Dispel Magic 13th: Hallucinatory Terrain, Compulsion 17th: Dominate Person, Tree Stride

Level 7 Features

-Draconic Aura(green): You and allies within 10 feet gain resistance to (poison) damage. Additionally, any ally within range may spend their bonus action and a healing die to heal themselves for the rolled amount.

Level 15 Features

-Draconic Adaptation(green): Continued use of your draconic power has cause your body to undergo permanant changes. you gain +1AC, additionally you can (breath underwater indefinately and can use spells and other abilities freely underwater).

Level 20 Features

-Dragon form(green): Using your standard action, your body assumed the characteristics of a dragon. For one hour, you gain flight and resistance to physical damage.  In addition, for the duration of the ability your weapon attacks also deal (poison) damage and do an additional 1d6 per attack.

I tried to make the template so that it would work for any cholor of dragon by swapping out the approriate things in the parenthesied bits and putting in spells themed after the dragon color.  I'm not sure if this is out of balance; it feels slightly stong to me, but I dont think it's anything game breaking.  The capstone is powerful, but the lvl 15 feature is much less so (combat wise, it's mostly a flavor feature) than those of the current oaths.

EDITED for better balance
