Was leaning towards tempest cleric, oath of vengeance paladin (undecided on race for those 2),or dwarven battle master. What are your opinions? Or do you have another character suggestion? |

Str 17, dex 17, con 16, int 10, wis 12, cha 12. take the criminal/spy background and you can be a burglar with a walking stick (quarterstaff is versatile so you can use it), and a mean temper. At 4 go +1 str and dex, at 8 go polearm master for extra damage. You won't be quite as impressive a spreadsheet as others here might suggest, but he won't suck and he will be fun! |

I like playing characters that get into the thick of things. The vengeance paladin has lots of combat ability, some nice skills, and a good blend of magic and class features to be dangerous. Variant human, half-elf, dragonborn or dwarf all make for good paladins. With those stats, you're pretty set for whatever you want to play. Though I have to admit, the first time I broke out a smite and tore up a monster with it, it felt really good. Battlemaster fighter is a lot of fun too, from what I saw. Someone in my group tried it for a one shot. He enjoyed it, though he found that running out of maneuver dice could be a bit of an issue. Though you can do some really cool stuff with your maneuvers that make it a lot of fun.
Of the fighter and paladin, here's what I liked about them. They're both pretty tough. I went great weapon with my paladin but was still armored enough that I felt comfortable in combat. Both classes can be amazing defensively with a sheild or incredibly damaging with a great weapon, so either way is a winner. The paladin is pretty versatile, as I mentioned. A good mix of class features, combat ability, and solid oath choices make paladins dangerous. I like being able to heal when necessary, have certain immunities, and their spells are very useful (especially if you don't have a cleric). The battlemaster can be very dangerous with all those sweet fighter attacks. The figher has some of the best class features, like action surge or the potential for 4 attacks. The maneuvers were cool and interesting. Adding in maneuver dice was a really nice bonus for certain maneuvers. Fighters deal really good consistent damage while paladins seem to deal really good spike damage.
Both the fighter and paladin don't seem to handle crowds very well to start off with. They're more single target classes. The fighter seems a little better at dealing with mobs sooner than the paladin. Running out of maneuver dice is a bit of a bummer.
I ultimately went paladin and am having a blast. With those stats, you'll have room for some feats no matter what race you choose. It's a bit campaign dependent, but I found playing a race with darkvision to be very handy. Plus if I'm play a vengeance paladin, I like the idea of being able to stalk my prey at night or in the dark. Fun stuff.
I don't know anything about the tempest cleric though, so I can't help you there. Over all, I'd say if you're looking for consistency in what you can do, go fighter. If you want a bit more versatility, try paladin. My group has me as a paladin, a fighter and a barbarian. We're all pretty close in our ablity to drop monsters. Though I found I have more to do outside of combat or can be more helpful in emergency situation in a fight with my paladin abilities. If our cleric drops, having me around to lay on hands or cure wounds has been pretty handy. We also have a very large party, so having some extra healing is good for us. |

Where are the I rolled a 13, 11, 10, 9, 7, 4 today what should I do? Oh yeah, kill yourself and reroll until you get 17, 15, 15, 12, 12, 10. |
