| #1Thank_DogSep 19, 2014 22:51:15 | I'm trying to decide what to multi-class with a paladin. It has to be either a fighter or a ranger in order to get the TWF style. I'm also trying to decide how many levels to take. There are so many advantages and disadvantages to every option that I'm having difficulty deciding between them all as well as which class to take first.
The basic concept would be a half-elf starting with 10 Str, 16 Dex, 14 Con, 10 Int, 10 Wis, 16 Cha. The TWF fighting style is a fundamental part of the concept so that's not off the table in any considerations. Dual Wielder will be one of the feats as will Medium Armour Master.
The choices I'm considering so far are either 1 level of fighter for the TWF style, 3 levels of fighter in order to get 5th-level paladin spells and going Eldritch Knight for Shield and a few other things, going 4 levels of fighter to get the feat but sacrificing 5th-level paladin spells, or going ranger to 3rd or 4th-level with the same considerations.
Currently I'm leaning towards a hunter ranger at 4th-level but even then I'm not sure whether I should go Colossus or Horde Breaker. |

Paladins already get a fair bit of bonus damage from Improved Divine Smite, and Colossus Slayer is 1/turn anyway, so it doesn't really synergize with Two-Weapon Fighting (other than increased accuracy of delivering it). |

Fighter 1 to start off with is great, because it gets you Con save proficiency (for keeping Paladin buffs up).
However, the spell smites (and for Vengeance, Hunter's Mark) and such use bonus actions, so they step on your TWF toes. |
| #5Thank_DogSep 20, 2014 6:07:22 | Yeah but how often will you really be using them?
For the rest of the time, having four attacks per turn, each doing 2d8+1d6+5 is pretty stellar, plus being able to add DS to four attacks a turn is pretty amazing. |
| #6Yag007Sep 20, 2014 8:11:03 | how are you getting 4 attacks? |

You can pump all in your casting stat, attack 3 times, still get a shield and get duelist added to your damage. The question is: if you want it to key off your charisma your only option is warlock tome (lev 3). Since you're multiclassing ranger though, maybe you'll pump your wisdom, in which case the magic initiate feat is enough. |
| #9Thank_DogSep 21, 2014 0:34:40 | I understood none of that.
The idea is primarily around the Improved Divine Smite and Hunter's Mark. Due to them, getting as many attacks as possible is the goal. Plus I like the idea of a Dex-based paladin with dual rapiers. |

You'll never have the option of wielding one because you wont have the right stats. So I might caution that people considering this trick (which also works great for low level clerics) should consider potential campaign ending level and whether DM is going with frequent vs rare magic items. |
