So I have a level 3 character for encounters (the DCI thing. ) it's my first character in DnD and I've finally (after playing two other characters One session each with level 4-5 players ) decided on a concept. I want to base him on a League of Legends character and a anime charavyer with my own added flavor thrown in. The champion is braum, the anime character is Armstrong from Full metal alchemist His weapon is a giant shield, now I've looked and can't find anything to support this in the game, so I've accepted using a longsword and or hammer. I've got two or three builds I'm looking at. The first is a fighter/barb. At the moment this is my favorite of them aesthetically, but, as I am 2 levels behind others, and I'd be one of two front line fighters I need to be mechanically sound. Build- 1barbarian(1st level) fighter X(2) Stats- Str:15 Dex:13 Con: 15 Int: 8 Wis: 13 Cha: 10 Why barb- unarmoed defense, I can now run around shirtless, with nothing but my sheild and rock hard mucles protecting me. Fighting style would be protection, for our rogue and paladin. I'm unsure on whether to go battle master or champion. Pro The other builds are more of concepts, haven't fleshed them out really. Which is why I turned to the experience and knowledge of this board. The second build is a paladin, oath of the ancients. Pros- very in line with "protect the joy and laughter of other people " as well as bring them joy. Otherwise known as great RP synergy built in. -great defensive abilities, especially with auras, -spells i can relfuff into heart warming sayings. (Ie, heals- The heart is the strongest muscle) - other things i probably missed. Cons- Has to wear armor, a big one for me. Limited damage potential and action potential from my first looks - pretty MAD stat wise. The last, and the one I've almost given up on -monk, or.grapple monk. Pros- unarmored one again, however no shield, Great damage potential and control with grapple /knockdowns/FoB etc Nifty abilities, but few mesh well with the idea. Cons- MAD, monastic warriors dont fit well with happy, funny personalities. Grapple does nothing but limit movement D8 hd for a front line close and personal build idea. So, please help me out guys. If i missed another possible idea let me know and any advice for builds would be highly appreciated. Remeber, I'm level 3 among mostly level 5s.

Have you seen shield master or tavern brawler? For grappling you can also move the target where you want. There is a great guide for grappling on these boards in fact for all classes. Champion fighter for crit fishing which works well for barbarian but need a few more levels than u might care to go. For battle master you can also reflavor the maneuvers like the paladin spells u were gonna do. I'd go at least third level for barb for bear totem maybe 6 for the extra carrying capacity to really show off the muscles. Human or Goliath for race. Human for feat if your allowed and like the feats I suggested Goliath cause the are big and powerful and human like and sure you can flavor how he looks to be more in line with what u want. Hope this helps

I've pretty much decided to not go monk But now after reading more of the barbarian it looks interesting. The only thing that keeps me from it is, the concept I have doesn't really get "angry". Its why I am in a perdicament Thanks for the info, and yes, I have planned to go shield master. And if I get a fighting style I'd most likely pick protection. A more explained concept is someone that focuses on protecting other party members, while still being no slouch on his own.

You could play it as if your friends get hurt u actually get serious and "rage" also there is a build someone else is doing if you search tactician you might be able to find it. I'm doing a similiar build to that and playing it but added paladin for a few reasons and seems to add more damage than his build

your Rage could be described as Battlemind, a state of focus centered on combat rather than wild actions. I've been wanting to make a samurai using barbarian adept...

Human variant (Tavern Brawler) Barbarian 2/Fighter 1 will fit the bill. Consider 15+1/14/13+1/8/10/12 for stats. 16 AC with resistance to the most likely type of damage at low levels is good. You'll be proficient to hit with your shield and do 1d4+3(5) damage. Or punch (same attack and damage as shield) and grab (with advantage while "raging") as a bonus action. Add being able to do your Protection shtick, and it seems pretty legit. I say Barbarian 2 because it will give you better defense and offence and you're that much closer to Bear totem.
