So me and my friends have started a new D&D 5e Campaign and I decided to roll a Rogue (Maybe MC Fighter idk yet). I'm primarily duel wielding but I always want the back up of a ranged weapon and I wanted to try out throwing weapons. Thing is they seem really weak..... Can I use them? Could you homebrew a feat to make them better? Should I stop using throwing weapons?

You should stop being concerned that your throwing weapons seem weaker than going with a dedicated melee weapon and a dedicated ranged weapon - especially as a rogue, since the bulk of your damage is going to come from your Sneak Attack, not your weapon.

Thrown weapons, especially the handaxe, are a fantastic option for a character that wants to have both melee and ranged capability and favors dual wielding.

Without any feats or other options to "make them better" you will likely find yourself on the top end of the damage dealing spectrum relative to the rest of your party with a pair of handaxes and sneak attack.

You have to remember what each weapon is and brings. A rapier will do 1d8, but its a very obvious weapon. Longbows are huge, good luck concealing them. Throwing knife? You can keep one or two hidden on your person if you have to go somewhere "unarmed".

I don't really want to use axes.... I was thinking shortswords daggers, darts (maybe) and if I get the duel wielder perk rapiers. Is that ok?

Handaxe will not allow for sneak attack, it isn't ranged nor finesse

Dagger will work
