High Level: Belt of Giant Strength vs. DEX

Hi there,

just playing around with lots of builds, and as long as I didn't have the DMG (which means: no magic items),

I had the feeling that dexterity was the superior stat vs strength for attacking (because of all the other advantages

AC, saves, ini, skills).

But now that I got the DMG, it feels like strength is taking the lead by far with the belts of giant strength.

Okay, depends on the campaign and the DM, but at least it's somehow possible to get strength 29/+9.

The maximum for dexterity is 22/+6 with ASIs and the magic manual.

What do you think?

Dex is better, but not by that much.

If you have 29 str, then yea, that wins over 20 dex.

If anything, belt of giants strenght should push you toward Dex even more.

I mean, if you have 20 dex, 10 Str, and then find a belt....  then you get benifits from both.

Also plenty of DM's will look at the Belts of Giant Strength and go NOPE. Not having that in my game.

Well, well, thanks for your input!

All this leads me to 2 thoughts:

1) The 5e designer's made a big mistake with the "fixed ability"-items like the belts and the other items

that work that way.

It's just too good to be able to go from STR 8 / -1 to STR 21 / +5 with just one item.

They should have kept the "+X-to-the-ability-score" items.

2) This makes DEX even better...

I'm DM'ing a fresh 5e campaign now, and I will either never let these items appear, or I'll get

back to the +2, maybe +4 items.
