| #2daspianAug 01, 2015 22:58:59 | so as much as i love necromancers, and before i even start to break down into balancing issues/ critiquing, i'll ask my first question...
what exactly does this class offer that the necromancer wizard/ death cleric/ or oathbreaker paladin can't offer? not to mention why do you need an entirely new class for a "necromancer build" when you can already make one (and yes i know some people argue that the necromancer wiz is not that great, but does it necessarily mean you need to create an entirely new class rather than just homebrew new erata rules and or features?)
secondly, and in all honesty this is my opinion, i'd just scratch the class idea and take some of your ideas and try to make a "new" homebrew necromancer path for the wizard, one that is more to your liking, creating new class options or even fixing current ones are ALOT easier and alot less stressful with balancing and playtesting and scaling issues.
however, that is just my opinion... i'll still offer help with balancing and critique if you want it; just saying that you're way better off just using the Wizard School of Necromancy, or even just updating the school of Necromancy with your own features.
1.) get rid of light armor... you're a full spell-caster and have access to light armor, you're not the cleric, you're thematically a lich and based off a "robed wizard" 2.) if you're gonna separate yourself and create a distinction between your class and the wizard... i'd scratch having a spellbook exactly like a wizard; even if it's just a reflavored and fluffed book called a necronomicon, remember... you can fluff anything to look/sound like something... but mechanically/RAW you want each class to be different. 3.) so you pretty much are a wizard with full-ritual casting, AND have access to a Channel Divinity-esque feature? i also notice you took the staple feature of Mind-Controlling a powerful undead entity, and gave it as your level 2 feature, try and remember scaling, at level 2 do you really think it's necessary to place that for your 2nd level feature, look at other classes features.
hmm i'm scrolling down more and more and reviewing this and i love the theme of the class don't get me wrong, but one thing i see alot is well... a WALL OF TEXT for everything. have you actually playtested this, because immediately you'll encounter... this issue "can you even keep track of all those features?" there's tons of them, alot of them are fairly long, complex or require enormous amounts of tracking and what not, try and simplify and reduce down your features... scratch off what you don't need, and or simplify everything, look at other classes there's not alot of tracking involved, by far the class that requires the most is probably the wizard and even that is fairly simple. i mean your already spending a decent amount of time keeping track of your spell slots,HD, status effects, combat situations, allies etc... why complicate your life further?
there's alot of other critiques i could make but i feel overly harsh for already pointing out alot... and that's not my intention i'm just trying to be helpful... think about what i said, see if you want to just make your life easier and do a Class Option for the Wizard and do your own take on the School of Necromancy... or just cut down on your features you have here... by like ALOT..
and while i know this class follows a similar path of a sorcerer as you referenced... it seems you pretty much made a mish-mash of the Sorc/ Death Cleric/ and Necro Wiz and added a multitude of new overly-complex features.
to help cut down on useless features, i'll start going through stuff now and provide a list below that you can remove... try and reduce and only keep the "essential" features that makes the class "who it is" and mechanically what you're going for... i know it's very generic and there's so many spins on what constitutes a necromancer... but you also have to remember... that's what spells and spell slots are for.
it seems the issue here is you're trying to do to many things and don't have a necessary idea of what you want your class to encompass... mechanically speaking.
1.) get rid of the 5th level feature "Black Touch" it's a useless feature taking up space when you can just cast "Blight" as a spell, does the exact same thing. 2.) Rotting Body is extremely OP for it's level, resistance to 3 different elemental types and no longer needing to breathe. (the latter isn't that important for some DMs) i'd reduce this to only Necrotic. 3.) get rid of Death's Comfort, not thematically fitting. 4.) i'd ditch the necronomicon idea, and focus on the channel negative energy feature route instead, id then start scratching some of the useless ones off and nerfing the others, most of them seem rather rediculous. 5.) Paralyzing Touch is way to OP to offer as an At-Will FREE no cost to perform. 6.) Dead Mind is OP as hell, get rid of it. 7.) Lich Transformation is still completely Broken, nerf it or scratch it. 8.) 3rd level bonus to proficiency wtih martial weapons...? ok i can't tell what you're doing here, it seems your class is all over the place with no mechanical theme, seems like you're trying to be a god at everything here. 9.) Touch of Death- healing for free is redonkulous for this feature, either put a limit on how many times you can be healed (such as equal to your Int Mod) or easier route scratch it entirely. 10.) get rid of channel divinity (oops i mean negative energy) Dreadful Aspect 11.) get rid of Dark Strike, if you're a caster, no point in needing to have this, i can't tell if you're trying to shoot for a "robed Lich" themed class or a Dark Cleric or a Death Knight Esque Oathbreaker type... it seems you're all 3 rolled up into 1. 12.) Inescapable destruction... is actually not bad for it's placement and level, i accept this. 13.) Soul Reaper; Scratch it, condense and find a more important feature. 14.) get rid of Dread Lord, to many features going on, and this just isn't important or essential it seems. 15.) Get rid of Undead Servants, wizard feature and you already have so many other features going on (i've already seen a ton of copy+pasted from death cleric and Oathbreaker, while i don't mind one or two... the issue i keep repeating is the fact you have to much...WAY TO MUCH going on).
i'm gonna cut it short here... there's just so much wrong with it, i'm not trying to be a dick seriously, but just sit down and think about what you really want out of this, do you really need a class? can i just do a class option for the wiz or sorc? if so what features are essential and are they overly complex or hard to track? if i seriously want to make a class, how can i cut down and make it simple to follow/ and look at other classes and follow how many features they have.
again i apologize if my critique was overly...critical... but just trying to help.. i will give one compliment though, i love the PDF and formating you really did some cool work on this and it seems you definitely are interested in it. |
