So yeah, this is going to be a collection of spells that NPCs have access to, modified for PC use.

Corrupting Touch. Cantrip.

Melee Spell Attack: Reach 5 ft., one target.

Hit: 2d6 necrotic damage, this damage increases to 3d6 at 5th level, 4d6 at 11th level, and 5d6 at 17th level.

Life Drain. 3rd level.

Target up to three creatures that you can see within 10 feet of you. Each target must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or take 2d6 necrotic damage, and you regains hit points equal to the total damage dealt to all targets.

At higher levels. When cast using higher level spell slots; increase the damage by 1d6 for each level.

Water jet. 3rd Level.

You shoot water in a 60-foot line that is 5 feet wide. Each creature in that line must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failure, a target takes 2d6 bludgeoning damage and, if it is Huge or smaller, is pushed up to 20 feet away and knocked prone. On a success, a target takes half the bludgeoning damage, but is neither pushed nor knocked prone.

At higher levels. Increase the damage dealt by 1d6 for every level above 3rd.

i'm all for the idea of a corrupting touch style spell, but umm why is it 1d6 and a touch attack, when i can do fire-bolt at the safety of range, and firebolt does 1d10.... or do ray of frost and do 1d8 and a slow, i think it should have something else, because it just seems incredibly underwhelming if its just flat 1d6 and nothing else.

Because it is. For one it matches actual corrupting touch and for two, I've been asleep :P

Changed it to 2d6, sure it's now initially stronger than Fire Bolt, but that doesn't last and it is a melee spell.

Would you mind sharing your thoughts on your life drain spell in comparison to vampiric touch? It looks to me like you have elected to make a spell which is strictly superior, and yet is the same level.

Mainly because I haven't been cross checking, gonna do that once I'm a- not AFB and b- through the MM.

Ah, that makes sense then.

To try and help a bit, here are my thoughts:

3 targets saving against 2d6 seems reasonably well-balanced against 1 attack at 3d6 each turn for up to 1 minute with concentration, though I might suggest increasing the range a bit (maybe to 30 feet).

The damage scaling at higher spell levels throws that a bit out of balance in favor of your new spell, but I think that can be mitigated fine by a simple change: have your new spell only let you regain hit points equal to half the amount of necrotic damage dealt, just like is the case with vampiric touch.

That last change is actually the one that negates my initial assessment of your new spell being strictly superior.
