Hey everyone,

This is my first attempt at a new subclass for 5e. I was hoping you guys could give me a little feedback.

I'll start by saying that I think the current warlock is pretty cool. The abilities are unique and it feels different from the other spell casting classes in 5e. I've been thinking that if I reworked the flavor that it would make a great academy trained warmage type class, as in my mind it melds really well with the short-rest focused spellcasting. For my campaign, these types of warmages would fall under the umbrella of a "gish" type character. I also found it odd that  the Bard and the Fighter each have a subclass dedicated to this spellsword archtype, but the warlock just got left with a pact blade to help him fill the role. Fiend patron, while a little beefier than the other patrons, didn't seem to fit the bill to me.

This was what I came up with: the Spellstriker "patron". This warlock has trained at an arcane academy that focuses on pumping out front line warmages. It blends martial mastery with defensive and offensive spell casting.

Spellstriker

Warlock Patron

Expanded Spell List:

1: Thunderwave, Sleep
2: Blur, Branding Smite
3: Haste, Lightning Bolt
4: Stoneskin, Greater Invisibility
5: Dominate Person, Destructive Wave

Level 1: Studied Defense

You have studied specific arcane arts to aid you in martial combat and are able to magically ward off attacks.
You know the Shield spell and may cast it once per short rest without consuming a spell slot.

Level 6: Eldritch Riposte

You have learned to quickly take advantage of your opponent's mistakes.
Starting at 6th level, when a creature misses you with an attack, you may use your reaction to cast a cantrip you know. If the cantrip is an attack, it must only target the attacking creature. Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a short or long rest.

Level 10: Siphoning Ward

You have learned to harness your enemies life essence through the brief connection made when your arcane energies envelop your foe.
Starting at 10th level, choose a damage type. Whenever you deal damage of the chosen type to a living creature, you may use your bonus action to gain temporary hit points equal to your Charisma modifier + your warlock level (minimum 11). You may choose a new damage type after a short or long rest.

Level 14: Arcane Strike

You have learned to weave your melee attacks with your most reliable spells.
Starting at 14th level, whenever you use the attack action, you may use your bonus action to cast a cantrip you know.

And here are some additional invocations that help flesh out the concept:

Channeled Blast
(Prerequisite: Eldrtich Blast cantrip; Blade pact)

Casting Eldritch Blast within 5 feet of an enemy creature does not cause it to be cast with disadvantage.

Arcane Blink
(Prerequisite: Level 12)

You may cast Misty Step at will without spending a spell slot or material components.

Well, there you have it. Thanks for taking a look. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Okay, I can take a look at it.   Be warned, I try to give honest critique and nitpick every detail that I think could be improved upon.

Okay... so, who is the patron, then?    Archmage patron?   Mystra or another god of magic?    Patrons aren't just a collection of abilities and spells, they follow a theme.     Fiend patron gives you abilities and transforms your body to be more like a fiend.   Same with the Archfey - you become more like one of the fey.    Great Old One turns you into a Call of Cthulhu style psychic occultist.

What is your theme beyond "Sword mage?"    With the exception of Stoneskin on the list, you could have gone with an Air Elementalist or Storm Spirit/god theme.

1: Thunderwave, Sleep

2: Blur, Branding Smite
3: Haste, Lightning Bolt
4: Stoneskin, Greater Invisibility
5: Dominate Person, Destructive Wave

This subclass strikes me as a work around to allow you to get all the spells, class features and abilities you want in a single over-powered class. Your patron spells are pretty much the most powerful spells of their level in the game. Your spell-and-attack feature outshines both the eldritch knight and bard equivalents. Siphoning Ward is far better than the Infernal Warlock ability, who are pretty much the temporary hit-point masters. Misty Step at will might seem balanced because it is a 2nd level spell, but it's a spell that you'd WANT to cast far more often than Levitate or Jump, it's also a bonus action. So you're giving a PC a free 30' teleport per round. That's way over-powered. This doesn't so much feel like a class to me, but a wish-list of over-powered "I wants".

I dont think this is really necessary. Just refluff the bladelock and patron of your choice. Your a standard caster, learned your spells through study. You could even replace one feature for the war magic feature from the eldritch knight. I think that would work much better then making a new subclass.
