I'm making a High-elf  tempest cleric and will be taking shocking grasp as shocking grasp as not only is it thematic it also gives me at will use of thunderbolt strike, that is of course assumining that i can hit things with it. i would at lest like it to be a reseanable option if i get disarmed. so i want to know if i should resaonable be able to hit  at higher lvls with a 0,1 or 2 int modifier?

AC ranges from 12 to 20.  With 16 being the norm.

And you get +2-6 to hit from proficency.  So you can hit without any Int, just not very often.

And even with 20 int, you can't hit reliably.

So... as much as you can spare, which is probably 13+1 from your race = 14.

Take the warcaster feat abnd use bless to enhance your attacks A 12 or 14 int should be good enough.

wouldn't standard array be

str  8

Dex 16 (14+2)

con 12

int 14 (13+1)

wis 15

cha 10

thou i was thinking of putting the 8 in cha and the 10 in str as i'm taking the sailor backgorund and a sailor with below avrage str just dosn't seem right to me.

i'm going tempset domian, useing long bow for my main range attack and rapiar and shield if i need to melee. i think tempest will work well as a ranged class as i'll have thunderwave, gust of wind and at lvl 6 my reaction and shcoking grasp can make use of tunderbolt strike to give me some space if guys close in on me,  wheather to move back or switch to melee without provking attacks of opertinity. shatter and distuctive wave seem like good options for ranged aoe. sleet storm,  hail storm, insect plague and situationaly control water could make it hader for guys to get to me.so, i doubt any of my non domain prepated spells will ever be offsive and intell i get more spell slots, they will most likely be going to healing/utillty spells.

that feat would be cool to have to make more use of my int. but if my only feat is war caster i can get dex or wis to 20 and other 19, there is kinda a wasted point in not leaving one of the them at 18 but all my stats would be even numbers at that point anyway. this is also asuming that this guy makes it to lvl 19. it might be better to up my con a bit too, thou those are dessions that will be made when I've played a bit.

Well the reason for going high elf is because I want to play tempest domain cleric of a non-evil god in the forgotten realms setting and form a lore stand point my only option for a god is deep sashelas and that means I'm an elf and I don't see a wood  elf worshiping a sea god, witch makes me a high elf. The choice of shocking grasp is for thematic reasons ... Thou now that I type this out a half elf would work too and yes the dm said charicter have work form a lore stand point.

You can totally play a good cleric of an evil god, especially when the god is a force of nature. My plan is to make a good Tempest Cleric who worships Umberlee. Umberlee is CE because she is the sea and the sea does what it wants. Which includes making huge storms to get at someone who is far inland. My character will be good and will try to limit the damage Umberlee can cause when upset. The sea is life for lots of cultures, even though storms can devistate countrysides. I could envison Umberlee doing a Katrina type storm to try to kill a single person who slighted her while my character stands on the coast and tries to convince her to eat a Snickers.

Talos' dogma is self-serving, demanding utter obedience from his priests and instructing them to spread destruction where they may.

you can not be a good cleric of Talos,

also you don't choose do be a cleric of a god the god chosses you to be their cleric, you can only choose to be a deities preist

and i would say that that my DM would let me do it, but i wouldn't becuase lore is important to me

edit:

Auril also expects her clergy esure ppl fear her

there it's much info on umberlee's clergie but i'd expect the same.

and in respopnse to your edit, don't want to play a charicter that is previced as evil ether and there in no way ppl wouldn't percvive a cleric of any of those gods as evil.

edit 2:

if the god is failing turning you evil or fails why wouldn't that god just give up on you and leave you powerless you have to play that strugle to an end evenlty with you being evil or powerless in the end unless you another god intervines in place of the orginal but as far that goes it's only deep sashelas that might for a tempes cleric and then porbably only if was umberlee that was thying to turn you

what your saying could work if there wasn't already established lore that i wish to follow about these gods that make it unfesiable

Edit

what you don't seem to be getting is that my arguments are based off pre-exsiting lore for the forgotten realms setting, and your saying to warp that lore to you own needs. i mean really of course you can do what ever you want if you make up your own lore but then your not really playing in the forrgotten realms ethier imo

Edit 2:

also i feel the need to add i wouldn't make a charitcer i don't think i'd like playing, really the orginal intent of this thread was to see if i'd be able to make use of shocking grasp or if it be something i had but couldn't really use. i did get a bunch of ideas on how i can play the charicter form where this thread went thou.

her perist might not be but the ones she made clerics would have thouse traits in common, once again by lore you don't choose to be cleric you are made one. you may well find a full spectrum of ppl that worship her but she will only make the ones that follow her ideals clerics. worshiping a diety and being a cleric of a diety are two very differnt things

And the description (or definition as you wrongly put it) of the paladin in the PHB says that he stands against the forces of evil, but if I want I can play an evil paladin that stands against the forces of good. Mechanicaly and thematicaly is both fine, as well as in terms of lore. My point is, dont put that much weight on a fluff text that is there only to provide a common stereotype of a class so that is easier for people who have never played the game to see if they want to pick this class. And the fluff text is by no means a definition.

I would not allow a good cleric of Talos. I would use either the 3rd ed one sterp alignment rule or the ruls form 2E Faiths and Avatars in regards to what alignment you can be.

I know Mystra a NG deity allows LE clerics but that is an explicit write up on her faith. Talos doesn't have good alighned priests.

THe PHB however doesn't have all of the FR god in it. Hoar is a god that will allow LG clerics in 2E and with the 1 step rule same thing in 3E as well. I think he would grant the tempest domain. Both Powers and PAntheons (2E) and Faiths and Pantheons (3E) allow clerics that are LE, LN and LG.

http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Hoar

Follow him if you want a good aligned tempest domain. I would allow htis as DM before I allowed good aligned clerics of Talos.
