Interchangeable Subclasses

In another class we had a slight discussion about how the Sorcerer subclass of Draconic Bloodline was pretty much able to be interchanged with any other base class subclass.

Pretty much any of them don't directly involve class features would be interchangeable (Such as the Rogues archetype of thief requiring cunning action for some). Such as the Fighter Class's Battlemaster would be interesting on a Rogue or Barbarian.

As a GM, I would allow this.

What other interesting ideas do you think are eligible? I kind of like the Draconic Bloodline for Barbarian, because it has extra hp and just one more thing to be resistant to.  Not to mention flight and a frightful presence.

That makes sense to me, though you might have to do some editing to make something like Draconic Bloodline work for a Barbarian. Maybe the extra damage and resistance work when you're in a rage, although you'd probably want to move off Cha as the attribute.

One thing I really like about 5E compared to 4E is how modular and customizable it is. In 4E it usually felt like if I changed anything, the whole edifice would come apart. 5E seems much more hackable.

That's an interesting concept, off the top of my head I would like to poach the hunter subclass(from ranger) with a fighter or barbarian. The School of divination from wizard would be great on a cleric/bard, school of conjuration would almost be better for a druid than it is for the wizard. Cleric and paladin could almost interchange all subclasses freely.

for your idea of maneuvers, you can take a feat that you you some maneuvers. I donT' have my book with me atm, but IIRC the feat give you 2 maneuvers and 2 superiority dices. other then that the abiliti work the same way then the fighter ability.

There might be less of these subclasses that would work than you think. Barbarian and bard subclasses won't at all as they both depend on inhereted class features, rage and inspiration respectively.

As cool an idea as it is, as a DM, I would probably disallow this. That does not mean you couldn't -- I certainly would -- work with the player to create a subclass for the character that is at least similar to the desired subclass.

Dragon sorcerer does have a spell point feature at level 18.

Martial adept is a thing.

And some things are given to classes because they can handle them.

You don't want to give champions crit range to a barbarian or rogue for instance.

Ha, I was thinking something similair with borrowing the Moon Circle and Wild Shape ideas for Ranger. Or Totems for Ranger. Any way to make Ranger more interesting. Ha....

I don't think some classes might get more benefit from their subclass bonuses than others.  Furthermore, they start getting bonuses at different times, which is really important if you start interchanging for level dips.  Let's say someone wants to dip into fighter for 1 level, but oh no, they don't get a subclass bonus until level 3, so they grab the Draconic Bloodline for bonus hp, an unarmored ac bonus, draconic language proficiency, and bonus to cha checks with dragons.  This just made fighter more powerful.

While I like to give more options to players, I think there are way to many interactions fo make a blanket rule making archetypes interchangible.

I've stolen the monk's shadow step for my shadow pact warlock.  The level 2 feature didn't really fit though since it relied on ki and involved access to additional spells some of which are already on the warlock spell list.  Hopwfully the DMG guidance will contain a few pages of guidance on how to build a subclass that won't break the system.

- Champion Fighter Archetype, just change "a second Fighting Style" to "a Fighting style from the following list" and include the Styles list

- Thief Rogue Archetype, just change Fast Hands to say "as a bonus action .... Usable with Cunning Action."

- Evocation Wizard Archetype, change every instance of Wizard spell list to <Name of Class> spell list.
