How does one mark a monster in 5e?

Yes, marking is gone. There are a few mechanics that echo the defender role (Protection Fighting Style and Sentinel feat), but the defender role, marking and mark punishment are 4E mechanics that did not transition to 5E.

Yes no marking but hostile creatures cannot move through your space. So if playing on a grid a creature wanted to walk by you in your space he could not. So once engaged in combat the creature has to disengage to not take an ao or move out of range and take an ao. Almost like a defender without added negatives.

You can do things similar to marking via improvised actions. That's largely up to your DM though which might mean it's an unreliable option. If a player wanted to force a monster to attack only his character for a round or impart disadvantage for attacking anyone but that character, to me that'd just be a matter of an action with skill check that carries a cost for failure.
