Hello Everybody,

I'm new here and to DnD and wanted to ask the community a question about a character i'm thinking of.

My Character is a Gnome Fighter and i wondered if I could give him his own faithful Dog mount, as there is an entry in the mounts section of the payers handbook noted as Mastiff.

would this be possible for his class or would I have to change him over to the ranger class?

when i think of this character just can't help but picture Sir Didymus from the Labyrinth Movie

thanks

Chris

I would allow it.

No different then a character with horse.

Just be careful as horses don't last long against dragons.

Any character can ride a mount. Rangers just have special rules for beasf companions, but not all mounts are beast companions. In fact fighters have the most space for feats such as Mounted Combat, so they're actually really good at it. And the rule of thumb seems to be that your mount should be one size larger than you, so a Small gnome can ride a Medium steed.

That used to be super common and in the core books (riding dog was in the players handbook for 3rd edition). I can't see why it would be a bad thing for 5e.

As long as it's a big enough dog, I don't see why not. go find a Mastiff and CHARGE!!

I will second the size requirement (no chihuahua mount for a gnome), and the mount has to be trained (or the gnome needs an ability that overcomes the need to train the mount).  Watch the first time a little kid tries to ride a dog, it isn't pretty--if it is a random mastiff, the gnome should expect to take some bite damage.  If it is a trained mastiff mount (which seems like something gnomes would have), I see no problems with it.

Not only should you let him ride the dog, you should also give him a +1 magic lance (melee weapons only usable on mounts). It'll be hilarious.
