Is this combo worth the investment?

I'm thinking of making a monk.

here is the combo.

Monk - Way of the Open Hand. I'm looking at the Push 15ft with a flurry attack ability.

Magic Initiate - Druid.

Cantrip - Thorn Whip and Create Bonfire.

Daily Power - Longstrider.

Combo - Cast Create Bonfire and use the flurry ability to push enemies into the fire and Thorn Whip to pull them into the fire. Longstrider gives me the ability to move into position easier.

While cool, the issue is how long does it take to set up? And how will your DM calculate that damage of the bonfire? You have to weigh the cost of the actions used to set that up versus just uppercutting your opponent in the same amount of actions.

I assume he is referring to the new "Bonfire" cantrip. This combo will not work if you intend to inflict the cantrip damage multiple times on a single creature during your turn - you only inflict damage 1) if in the bonfire's place when the spell is cast 2) when entering the space for the first time on a turn 3) when it ends the turn in the spot.

You will get much better results by grappling to reduce speed to 0, then dragging it in & out of your bonfire on your turn with your movement. if you are fighting next to your bonfire & have your opponent grappled, they have 0 movement, but you can spend double to move them... so dragging them out and pushing them back in for 20 movement on your turn will inflict damage again per condition #2. On their turn, they can spend their action to break your grapple (thus not attacking you) which may not succeed, especially if you are a rogue with expertise in athletics and a decent Str, or they can try to attack you and take more damage at the end of their turn per condition #3.

The fact that you would want to pull someone out of a fire to deal more damage to them is just ridiculous.

I think it takes too long to set up for far too little damage.

I think it would work much better with 2+ people then 1.

Let a druid setup the bonefire, then use the monk to push/pull.

Druid could also turn into a grapple animal and drag stuff as well.

Though it's still not bad for 1.

I thought of a warlock. Using EB to push targets back into the bonfire.

But there just isn't much 'extra' damage from it, and you need to have them lined up just right.  Could be fun, but I'm not sure how effective.

1d8 grows to 2d8 at the same time hex goes to 2d6. and sure it's a save, but it's also 1/2 on a miss. and at-will, so you still have all your other spells.
it's the positioning that kills the idea.
i've already tried similar with a grapple bard and cloud of daggers. viable if not great by myself, but really good with some teamwork.

Oh yes, synergy between players is definately an advantage. I thought you meant that you personally would be popping multiple bonfires, turn after turn to make a huge conflagration

No drag needed. Have your caster put it on the opponent. Your "fighter" is right infront of the opponent. Either the opponent takes an extra d8 dmg every round or moves out and takes a OA, or loses his turn to disengage. Then you just repeat and win. Caster the whole time can be casting cantrips or spells on the opponent if he doesn't move out of the bonfire. GG

Edit: At the time you cast is when the damage is applied for bonfire.
