Is this just lazy DMing

Hey guys i joined this group on roll20 and yeah i think the DM is possibly one of the worst i have ever seen.

Every game his tv going on in the background all game.

Having to repeat your questions 3-4 times.

Running a moduel without making maps or flavor text

Using same token for every monster

Backtracking to prevent smarter pc

Talking stupidly fast so people have to ask him to repeat it. (this was everyone in the group asking)

After the last one me and friend left but here is what he did. This is for the lost mines i checked the moduel after we left.

So we get attacked by 10+ undead half way in a red wizard comes out and attacks us No talking (in the book there was suppost to be)

So i took him down alive and we questioned him. afterwords we tied him up gaged him and took all his gear.

Next we are in an open area all of us ready an action to kill him so we ask the question. If we let you go will you seek revenge against us?

He replys Yes monolog how he is a member of some order of evil wizards. I say yeah as soon as he said yes i shoot him as do 3 other people.

Dm was like are you sure? he is a member of this order they will seek revenge if you kill him.

Friend replys how will they know we will strip the flesh boil the bones shatter them spred them into the sea no remains for divination.

Next he reply oh well after he says yes and got his monolog off he mistysteps

So he is 30 feet away from us we still shoot him.

He teleported behind a tree.

How you cant teleport somewhere you cant see and even if he does he is still 30 feet away so i still shoot him i just move.

we said unless you say he gets away with dm magic you are basicly ignoreing the rules in the game. he refused to say he was using dm magic so we said well he is dead then all the group agreed.

Next week he tells us he got away after he misty stepped. (looked in the book that guy dieing does not effect the story he just did not like smarter players)

as far as i can tell this is some lazy ass dming.

I would say more like a douchebag than lazy.  I'm sure he was patting himself on the back for a job well done afterwards

For contrast, when I ran this encounter, the wizard in question ordered his zombies to stop attacking and then he invited the adventurers in for tea.  A wizard, even an evil one, will want to know why the PCs sought him out.  The mission the PCs were sent on is to investigate, nothing more...

Of course, once the PCs starting asking too many questions that he didn't want to answer, he tried to cast Charm Person.  That was lazy DM'ing - I forgot that 2 of the party were elves...

I'd be looking for a new group/DM to play with.

Pretty much what these guys ^ said.

I am sure there are plenty more dm's on that site that have got to be better this guy.

If you do keep playing with him then talk to the group to establish that you won't accept the noisy tv ext. Then next game tell him your requirements or the group leaves.

But myself, if it was an online game and that was happening I would just leave it, but I would tell the DM exactly why I was leaving first. Most won't change, but the odd person out there will.

Except when you say charm worked because you didn't know better and your players didn't know better either so the story continued the wrong way and you will regret it until the end of your life.

Oh, I also completely forgot a key piece to this whole encounter!  The necromancer wants the party to find out a some info for him.  If he attacks right away, he cannot give the quest!  The quest more or less directly opposed to another quest the party already has which leads to a fairly important decision by the party.

I'm all for modifying store bought adventures, but what the OP describes is total BS.  Find another group...

Yep it sounds like the DM is just not interested in..  DM'ing!  Find another group.

Or perhaps he is inexperienced and made some rookie game and social mistakes.  Everyone around here is so hasty to assume the worst and break out the torches and pitchforks.  But I suppose people will say that they've been a pro DM from the moment they picked up the book.

I would talk to him.  Point out that the TV is a distraction and ask him to slow down his narrating because it's hard to understand.  Then talk about his use of the rules.  It might not be worth sticking around in this group regardless, but he can't grow as a DM if no one is willing to point out where he is making mistakes.

The TV and the narrating are one thing and should be an easy fix if the DM is interested.  The DM backtracking and changing events because he/she didn't want the PCs to succeed at something - that's a whole different thing...  and yes, we are only getting one side of the story.

If the DM says opponent X does Y and the party says 'we ready A then do B & C'  beforehand, the DM can't turn around and say 'no he does Y then Z! ha ha!'
