| #1ShojiteruSep 08, 2015 4:45:02 | I like Monks. There, I said it. I like shooting things 600' away. A monk with a longbow and sharpshooter, perhaps archery if starting fighter. The bow to slay all those who oppose me. Anyone who survives 10 turns of being shot at, I will punch in the face. Is this a possible build? Fighter 1, human varient sharpshooter. All I can think about to put in this. Anyone else have ideas? Crossbow expert I don't think would be needed since a crossbow doesn't have the range of a longbow and if it gets too close, punch it in the face. With a 600' range, and this would not be for all settings, you can have sacks full of arrows so ammo is no problem. Or stay back with the equipment/mules and snipe from there. |

If you're really investing yourself in the ranged thing (staying back with the mules and such during combat), being a monk is kind of a waste. You could be any other class and flavor it as monk-ish in aesthetics and behavior.
Unarmed strike doesn't strictly require your fists, so you could jump around and kick stuff as close range; you also have a free hand whenever it's not holding an arrow, so you can punch with that.
It's worth noting that "10 turns of being shot at" will almost surely never be the case, but sniping and ranged combat being options is nice.
Might take a level of fighter for the Archery style, or 2 of ranger if that appeals more to you thematically. |

| #4ElfcrusherSep 08, 2015 7:17:19 | If you and your DM are into homebrews I recently started this thread to discuss archery-specific Monk subclasses. Would love any and all input. |
| #5ShojiteruSep 08, 2015 9:31:47 | I just figured it would be fun to snipe arrows from maximum distance possible with a unique build. Monk isn't the best, but not the worst for melee bonuses and dodging and such. Unarmed doesn't matter much otherwise straight fighter with tavern brawler achieves same thing low levels. Originally it was Ranger vs Fighter. Maybe a barbarian is a good choice. Was curious how 600' visious wouls be. Any advice towards what else besides the totem with eagle and sharpshooter? |
| #6YunruSep 08, 2015 9:50:59 | Follow up with Rogue (Assassin), because attacking that far out should normally qualify for Surprise. |
| #7OmniliciousSep 08, 2015 11:37:08 | Seems like you are losing more than you gain. My preferred non Ranger (as main focus anyway) is heavy into bard stealing spells from Ranger (possibly elemental weapon from Paladin too) and throwing 6 levels or so into other classes (Warrior, Paly, Ranger or Sorc work well). I went 14 Bard, 3 Ranger and thinking 3 Paly but will wait and see. This way you can scale Ranger spells to levels no Ranger can even get to (this build would have 17 spell levels so you get a 9th slot. It would be higher with Sorc, lower with warrior).
Seems to me the best archer in game certainly isn't Ranger but actualy building around other classes. If someone got Monk to work then by all means explain it because Monk is a class too connected with it's own mechanics to deviate far from. |

| #9ShojiteruSep 08, 2015 14:13:17 | A fighter archer would do 9 attacks in a round, maybe? A bard archer is basically a better spellcasting archer than ranger. DPR wise, fighter is better. Utility wise, bard is better. However, how much dpr is the fighter over the bard using longbow sharpshooter? Maybe valor bard dips into fighter 2 levels for action surge, bringing the dpr closer? |

| #16IdkwhatMyscreennameisSep 08, 2015 21:57:51 | Longbow Monk
I bet that you could shoot an arrow then action surge to dash, step of the wind, shadow tp, move and then catch the arrow with your reaction therby making it a monk weapon and atk you would get that sick 1d10 damage for your entire turn, I say go for it. shooting at 600 ft is overrated when you have options like this. This needs a math check though, anbody got +5 to math? my +4 will not cut it.
