Longsword Duelist vs GWF

Aug 27, 2015 21:53:24 I was bored so I ran the numbers, duelist with a longsword is superior to GWF. Percentages listed are the chance to deal at least that much damage: Duelist 3-100, 4-87.5, 5-75, 6-62.5, 7-50, 8-37.5, 9-25, 10-12.5 GWF 1-100, 2-92.9, 3-85.7, 4-75, 5-64.3, 6-53.6, 7-42.9, 8-32.1, 9-21.4, 10-10.7 Sorry for the lack of spacing, I'm posting from my phone and hitting enter doesn't seem to do anything.

Is this comparing a versatile longsword to a duelist using a longsword?

Aug 27, 2015 22:04:18 Longsword wielded in one hand with duelist vs longsword wielded in two hands with GWF. Basically if you have the duelist fighting style there is no reason to wield it with two hands.

Why would you use a longsword if you specialize in Great Weapon Fighting? I could see if you absolutely had no choice, but that will be the exception, not the rule.

Those with GWF are mostly likely to use a Greatsword is the point. Their isn't only one weapon in the game.

Two-handed longsword makes sense for a grappler paladin or battlemaster who also wants nice damage. They can take GWF for the boost to all their extra damage dice, and Great Weapon Master if they want, while maintaining the ability to attack while grappling. This assumes they spend more time not-grappling than grappling, since obviously the would be better off with Duelist if their focus was attacking while grappling. Maybe not a common setup...but not inconceivable.

Alternatively you could carry an extra one-handed weapon that you can draw when you grapple. My GWF Paladin always has a couple hand axes, and they've served well so far at levels 1-3.
