Hey all, and thanks in advance for any suggestions!

playing a 5th level wizard in AL and he is about to hit 6th level.  Looking dor suggestions on spells that are worth taking at 6th and 7th levels.  So, 2 3rd and 2 4th level options.

Important bits....evocation wizard but i need more utility spells for now as i have offensive choices covered for now. Also since it is AL i basically cant buy any more spells for my spellbook so my choices are important.

Sofar i took fireball and leomunds hut. Its my big nuke and our party rest insurance covered.

Sofar i am leaning towards taking phantom steed and Slow as my next spells.

The DM likes to attack our horses, so phantom steed gives me and a couple other party members a 100ft combat speed option that still lives for a minute if attacked.  Slow targets a save i cant attack yet, and would be an option for when we get hit by brute monsters where a 30 damage nuke wont end the fight but denying big multi-attacks/essentially 50% chance to destroy a caster/denying retreat.

Or should i just take Haste because its obvious and we have a GWM half orc champion? And it dont allow saves every round...

blink seems like a good defensive option?

for 4th level i was leaning towards taking Arcane Eye and Fabricate.  My wizard is proficient in Smiths tools so i can fabricate weapons or full plate or whatever.  Arcane eye for dungeons where the doors arent air tight, which should be all of them, but just might mean every dungeon in the future will be vacuum sealed...

What other advice do folks have?

Hi,

Did you have a look on that guide ? http://community.wizards.com/forum/player-help/threads/4157906

Spells are rated with commentary. It is extremely useful to make your own choices. You can complete your research with the 2 sorcerer's guides available for a slightly different advice on some spells. (but keep in mind that the same spell can be rated differently for a sorcerer or the wizard, as the two classes may have a different use of it).

As 3rd lvl spells, I'd like to mention counterspell, which doesn't take a action and can save the day if countering the big AoE or save-or-suck spell. Dispel magic is also very good, but many other classes have access to it. Blink is one of the best defensive spells, but it does only one thing : defense. Some 4th level spells give you more options.

As 4th level spells, arcane eye is the best choice for spying if you don't mind taking the rogue's job (or if there is no rogue in your party). As an evoker, greater invisibility gives you advantage with all those attack cantrips, increasing your chance to hit. AND it is a good defense spell as well. Polymorph gives you the opportunity to go fighting on the frontline (nobody expect you to do this, but the ankylosaurus is not bad at 5th level, and the T-Rex at 8th is a good fighting machine). Thus, you can sometimes play that role if the party is outnumbered OR defend yourself efficiently if attacked.

I really like illusions...but they are not particularly useful in my group.  DMs monsters tend to just automatically know to attack/move through walls and terrain and magically know to interact with illusionary obstacles.   Its annoying, but is a quirk i can live with because the game is fun.

Counterspell would have been great in our last major fight...cuz we all ate a cone of cold. I want this spell. But i dont think i'l ever get the chance to acquire it due to the AL 'we hate wizards' rules.  Clerics can prepare any spell in the book, but wizards cannot buy spell scrolls or simple access to VIEW spellbooks even in metropolitan cities like Waterdeep.  This is partly why i want Fabricate because our party can't find full plate armor to purchase because of the crafting time required to make it.  So instead ill just make it for them in 10 minutes.

My current defensive spells are mage armor, shield, and mirror image.  I think i should take blink to give me a way to avoid things like dragon breath.  DM likes to attack me.  Monsters frequently ignore other characters and provoke OAs to get to me.   I guess they like to eat small children(gnomes).  Same reason i have been avoiding concentration buffs.

I think i am leaning towards taking Blink and Phantom Steed.  Then Fabricate and Arcane Eye at 7th. 8th level I'll probably go with improved invisibility and possibly counterspell.

Lets see:

  • No spells to create illusions
  • No need for offensive spells

So it looks to me like you are after three kinds of spells:

  1. Utility
  2. Survivability
  3. Situational

Utility spells for Level 3:

Dispel Magic. This is the true workhorse of D&D. Whenever you need a spell or an effect gone, this will be your go-to spell. Is it good? Yes. Is it a desperate need for you? Probably not.

Fly. Need to attach ropes, climb up a wall, get away from a position, or just scout a bit? Handy spell to have with a  ton of uses.

Haste. This can be a great spell, but it really depends on how your party looks. If you have a party member that looks invincible with this one, take it, if not, skip it for now.

Survivability spells for Level 3:

Blink. This is good in combination with Mirror Image, but that means two spells spent on defense. How often do you get hit in combat? The answer to that question tells you if you need this spell.

Counterspell. You counter a spell. Pretty darn useful in order to survive.

Hypnotic Pattern. Yes, I place HP in survivability because of the Crowd Control effect. Shut down the enemy and you can control the battlefield. No save past the initial one makes this an amazing choice in order for the group, and in its prolongiation, you as well to survive.

Protection from energy. Is it amazing? No, but its very useful in making sure that you survive if things go wrong. Also note that you can cast it on someone else who might run up ahead of you and catch a lot of damage, saving you from that problematic issue.

Slow. Not as good a choice as HP, but there are times it can be very handy depending on what kind of opponent is being fought.

Situational spells for Level 3:

Animate dead. Useful for sending bodies into combat, activate traps, act as a living shield, or any number of weird uses.

Utility spells for Level 4:

Fabricate. I wanted to bring this one up here to discuss it. While it looks good initially there are other spells can can support you instead. Think hard about how many times you really are likely to use this one and in how many scenarios. Then ask yourself if another lower-level spell would be sufficient.

Survivability spells for Level 4:

Arcane Eye. Probably one of the ultimate spells. Scout out the dungeon, map the dungeon, map a city, find a person you are searching for, etc, etc. Possibilities are endless. Note that the spell description also states that the eye is invisible! Find out what the opposition is, plan about what to do and how to take them down, knowing what spells to use for maximum effect...priceless.

Dimension Door: This is your "Get out of jail free"-card. Surrounded? Not anymore. TPK about to happen? Not anymore. Note that it is Verbal only, so it can even be cast if you are tied up.

Stoneskin. This is really a trap. 100 GP casting cost and you need to concentrate. Avoid like the plague for yourself. May have some use to put on another player though (see Protection from energy above ^^).

Situational spells for Level 4:

Banishment. I am torn on this one. It looks like a great spell, but look at the component ("an item distasteful to the target"). What is that? If you can find this out; great. If not...doh!

Hope this helps.

On Fabricate, I don't deny that lower level spells can duplicate some of its effects, but the spell is open ended.  Subject to the size limits, any time that an item would be of great use, you can make it if you have the materials and 10 minutes.  You can fit a lot of barbed wire into a 5'cube coiled up, and the same goes for wire-line fitted with tiny bells.  If you have access to wood or ice or other hard non-mineral, you can make a good wall out of eight 5'x5' cubes.  Plus, while other schmucks use ladders, you can make a ~50-foot long staircase, depending on your DMs views on how oe would engineer it.  (You could also certainly make a 40' tall ladder.)  If you have the high ground, you can make eight 5' diameter spheres to roll down onto the enemy, or one big 10' sphere,  Need to break down a door?  If the door is wood, make a battering ram.  If the door is stone, use the door as raw material to make a bettering ram, then no more door.

Questionable uses aqlso abound, like if you have a vast pile mixed treasure that would take too long to coult, soime DMs will let you make gold bars, by only transforming the gold coins into bar form.

It's awesomely open ended.

Pandaemonius: I agree that Fabricate is a great spell overall. I am not just sure hwo much use he would get out of it over some others when playing in AL as it is so highly restrictive in gaining spells.

Main reason i want fabricate is because the crafting rules are so dumb.

Our party has 2 fighters that want full plate, but we're 6th level and have only found about 800gp total.  So most of us have about 5-600g if we saved everything but a few healing potions.   Since we are not allowed to pool money to purchase or downtime days to help craft no one has access to it.

When we were in waterdeep(read metropolitan city) there was none available for purchase and DM said it had to be custom made since it normally takes a year to craft.

The way i read fabricate, a collection of a few serviceable pieces of metal armors would provide enough quality components to craft a fancy set of full plate.  My eccentric gnome will obviously have to add a few shiny embellishments.  I am thinking a gold filagree makers mark.

I dont like the offensive spells at 4th so
