Hey guys,

I will be hitting level 6 soon and I'm really having trouble picking which spells to get.

My idea was to grab find steed (we have a good mix of indoor and outdoor enviroments).

My DM will allow any animal that could technically be purchased (as long as its CR is below ours).

for my second spell I was thinking of taking Spirit Guardians. I like the idea of being able to dish this damage along using other non-concentraiton spells. (my group is majority melee users)

If the group is mostly melee users, the best way you can contribute is by helping them. Find ways to grant them crits. Hold Person, stuff like that.

For me

Lots of melee users: Bless or Haste?    Damage: Good ol' Fireball?

Lots of Damage: Spirit Guardians and Fireball/s?    I also have a fondness for Flaming Sphere.

But what you said already works great for you, and both have massive badass flavour. (depending on steed)

The great thing about this feature is in the choosing, but If you can't decide, why not stick with your gut.

As a rule I like to look at the paladin and ranger spell lists for gems that are rarely seen until much later level. Paladin auras can be fun for example healing your entire party with a single spell after a tough battle.

If you don't have a dedicated cleric you should definately take Revivify. You can retrain it at level 9, but until then there is nothing the other players will thank you for having more.

Secondly my vote if for Fireball. As a melee heavy party you have only single target attacks and fireball will speed up the game dramatically against encounters with lots of enemies.

I disagree with the other posts that encourage spells to make your allies better. As a melee heavy party does not need more help being better in melee, they need someone who can shore up areas where melee are illequipped to handle.

Depends a lot if you need healing or not.

Aura of Vitality

Prayer of healing

Revivify

Counterspell

Haste

Bless

Vitriolic Sphere

If your DM is going to let you 'match' your CR... then Find Steed does become very powerful.  Is he only allowing Beasts? or anything of that CR? Will he allow you to 'ride' a Giant Ape?
Just grabbing a Mammoth pretty much breaks the spell.  Oh, don't forget to buy it some armor....

I like to actually take eldritch blast, so u have a decent attack when your not  wanting to use spell slots

And if there are a number of enemy mages then counterspell too

Its a good mix of offense and defense... and bumps your base damage up  a little
