Lore or Valor Bard for three man group?

Party composition: Human sword and board Vengeance Paladin, half-elf Dragon Sorcerer and human Bard. We recently lost two players (Elf Knowledge Cleric, Half-Orc Battlemaster Fighter) so the DM is allowing some reconfiguration of our characters.

Our Bard player is relatively new to DnD and is still figuring out how best to play his character. He is currently a Valor Bard but could change to Lore if it makes sense to do so. A primary concern is survivabilitu given the small party size and only one front line combatant. Is the armor and more combat-focused inspiration of the valor bard worth giving up the spell casting versatility of the lore bard in this context?

Agreed.  With only 1 tank, extra AC would help more then more spells.

Yup. Keep valor. As far as spells go, lore only grants more spells known but valor can cover some useful spells, and with a paladin and sorcerer the group likely has solid spell choices without the lore bard option.  Better combat would do the group more good. Skills is where you should be scrutinizing because the group is CHA based so the expertise skills and proficient could be important. Not important enough to go lore because of jack-of-all-trades but important enough to consider because you are combining cleric / rogue functions in the group.

Thanks, folks! Valor it shall be. The importance of skills is a useful reminder -- I'll have a chat with the players next session to figure out if we need to broaden the skills covered by the party. As Ashrym points out, the entire party is now Cha-heavy, and perhaps Expertise could help with some key skills that we are currently short on, like one member with a good Perception score.

Cheers!
