Low level Multiclassing

So in most of the threads about multiclassing ideas or the guides to classes, they all seem to be looking at high level play as the ultimate goal. While that is what every should hope for, taking a character and bringing them through powerful levels, I find that I rarely get into truely high level play. Highest i ever got in 3rd was 10th, and in 4th it was some where in the middle of Paragon tier.

So even though upper level multiclassing ends up with great synergy, what about lower levels? Ive been looking at as much as I can, and I can't seem to figure out how to blend low level classes. Putting off your classes 3-5th level features seem to really under power your character in comparison to single class characters. Was this a built in intention of the game? or just unfortunet math?

Sorry about spelling its late for me. Like really late.

EDIT PS

Im multi classing a paladin/barbarian, the flavor being I worship a storm deity, probably Talos, and I have this idea of litterally channeling a strom, and using the rage mechanic as divine wrath following through him.

Delaying Extra Attack is a real pain in build that would get it.

Not all multiclass combos will want it that badly however. And a small dip can still give very valuable features, worth delaying those of your main class.

Like for level 5 you could have Monk 1/Druid 4 (defense only), Warlock 2/Sorcerer 3 (EB full spellcaster), Barbarian 2/Rogue 3 (medium armor Str finesse rogue), Rogue 3/Wizard 2 (AT skill monkey into full caster).... and so on.

Are you Dex based? Do you like Con? Then you'll love starting as a Barbarian. Wield a shield, get a high AC (12+Dex+Con)!

The delay to Extra Attack can hurt, but there are classes that don't get it (Rogue), and races that can compensate for it (Variant Human picking up a bonus attack feat) to soften the blow.

Generally you want to go straight to 5.

Then your free to multi-class.

Support and tank characters can reasonably go a differnt way.

They could. Certainly if you're Dex/Wis. But I don't know of (m)any classes that are Dex/Wis and could take advantage of Martial Arts. I guess you could go Fighter if you also want to be party radar, or just like punching stuff alot, but then you miss out on the juicy -5/+10 feats for your bonus action attacks.

LVL 5 tends to be a big bump for most classes, so delaying it can be a pain.  But sometimes it is worth it.... both either for power reasons or RP reasons.

I am playing a Ranger/Rogue Archer, and I know I want to be 5/5 by 10th level, but not sure how to get there.  Extra Attack finally convinced me I think... Ranger 2 then Rogue 2 then Ranger 5 then Rogue 5.

For my own Monk build, I decided to m/c Rogue1 for Expertise(Perception) - because I'm also supposed to be the party Scout.

Somewhere after Monk5 (for Stunning Strike and Extra Attack) I will m/c Fighter2 - to create a Nova / Striker potential.with Action Point (I know, 4e term)

If I can find a campaign that reaches L20, then I want Monk17 Quivering Palm as my capstone feature - hence no more m/c'ing.

But if the campaign will end before that, then I am open to m/c Rogue2 for more mobility via the extra Dash / Disengage action.  On two legs, "Heigh-ho Silver, awaaayyy!"

Well Im playing what i hope to turn into a raging Paladin. Im going to be a worshiper of Talos. ITs HotDQ, I started as a Palading. So Two levels of Pally gets me the twice a day smite. Third level pick up Barbarian 1, and i get two rages per day. So for BBEG fights, I could save one rage and one Smite, use the other two judically. Lay on Hands can save the Bard from having to spend a cure on me right away. 4th-6th will be Pally for extra spell slots, Channel Divinity, and extra attack. WIll see what i do after that

My Human (Variant) Fighter 2/Assassin Rogue 3 with Crossbow Expert loves low-level multi-classing!

My favorite part of this character is being able to yell, "I waste him with my crossbow!"  and mean it.

In general, what most people here have said is true: delaying Extra Attack is a bad decision.  If I were your Paladin, I'd go Paladin 5 and then into Barbarian.  Your ability to kill multiple mooks/minions a round will pay off quickly in HotDQ.  Trust me.

either way...just my 2 cp.
