According to dev tweets, you should be able to use the 1st level spell granted by Magic Initiate more than once a day if you have your own spell slots you can spend. This guide will thusly rank the first level spells based on how useful they will be to a spellcaster.

[Stat] Represents what stat the spell keys off of. [None] means that it is stat independent. An asterisks (*) means the spell requires concentration.

Apologies for any errors, working from phone.

Under construction

Hunter's Mark: [None] (*) IT'S A TRAP! Seriously, unless Ranger cantrips interest you more than Warlock ones, go with Hex instead.

Can you even take Hunter's mark with magic initiate?

I double checked.  Apparently magic initiate only allow these classes:

Choose a class: bard, cleric, druid, sorcerer, warlock, or wizard.

So, yeah ... Hunter's Mark is a double trap because you can't even pick it.  ;)

You will want to consider that some people are going to still not allow for Magic Initiate to be used with spell slots.

With that being said, my top picks for 1st level spells:

1) Goodberry from Druid.  You can pick Shilellagh and Thorn Whip and you are a mini Druid.  Only being able to use Goodberry once per day isn't even an issue since the Goodberries last until you take a long rest or they are eaten.  Going by the devs tweats, a Cleric of Life using Goodberry could be giving out berries that heal up to 4 hp per berry.

2) Hex from Warlock.  Sure, you can only cast it as a first level spell, so it's Conc, 1 hour, but  imposing disadvantage on something's Wisdom checks (Perception, Insight) or Strength checks (Athletics for climbing, or a druid knocking someone prone with a Wolf wild shape) is amazing.

3) Find Familiar from the Wizard.  This one might be considered a trap since you can cast it once and forget about it, but being able to have an Owl with a fly speed of 60' and being able to use its senses to see .... that can be a priceless combination.

Ranger and paladin do not have cantrips. It is likely this lack which is the reason the feat in question does not list those classes as an option, since it grants cantrips

Actually, I was under the impression that they didn't allow paladins and rangers strictly for the reason of getting one's hands on things like a Smite Spell or Entangling Strike.   Its also why Skald can be scary powerful at level 10 - they're the ones who can get their hands on Swift Quiver and paladin smites without multiclassing.
