Question 1- (Since I've seen this MANY TIMES) The warlock's spell list goes to level 9, but they only ever get spell slots up to level 5! What gives?! Warlocks get the Mystic Arcanum class feature. This lets you, at the appropriate level, gain a 6th level (Later also a 7th, 8th, and 9th) spell you know. After you cast these spells (Each one seperately), you cannot cast them again until you take a long rest. They are similar to Daily powers from 4E. |
| #8Suzume_StjohnAug 28, 2014 19:23:21 | ???.... just in case. Free to post now. |
| #9Litania84itAug 28, 2014 21:21:21 | Thanks for doing this!
How do people feel about the evocations that require a spell slot? It seems to me that the powers in question never justify losing one of your few slots AND the chance to get an at will evocation; Why were they not just added to the warlock spell list?
I love the warlock from a fluff perspective but again and again it seems that other casters are just able to do anything a warlock does, just A LOT more often (maybe our DMs don't give us enough short rests). |
| #10Suzume_StjohnAug 28, 2014 21:46:57 | I personally dislike them. Some ARE decent... but using a spell slot, an Invocation pick, and only once a day.... that's too much cost for not enough pay out.
Mine has done well thus far as far as powers/session. If you are speaking of the starting of HOTDQ, there is not really much time for breaks, so that's going to hurt, but it should get better later on.
Currently I have all the info I want to put up, just need to make it into a presentable... presentation. Hopefully after I get the format for the first section, the rest will just be pug and play! |

| #13Devils-AdvocateAug 28, 2014 22:39:25 | We can also be reasonably sure the DMG will contain advice for adjusting the pace of the adventuring day by increasing or decreasing the time required for short/long rests. That will, at least in home games, give DMs some ability to accomodate Warlocks in campaigns that might otherwise have too many or too few rest opportunities for them to function at the same level as rest of the group. |
| #14Yag007Aug 28, 2014 22:46:18 | Honestly eldritch blast with agonizing blast is so good that it alone makes it worth it, i mean 2d10+10 at level 5 is up there with anything else that can be used infinately, but the problem is that anyone can get it with a small dip and other classes can arguably make better use of it.
The at will invocations cant be overlooked either while they aren't dispel-proof, they may as well be since you can just recast which is nice.
They also Gish very well...but I dunno, having spells replenish after a short rest can be insanely good or mediocre at best depending upon your DM so I think warlock really hinges on that, which isn't the best game design but there you have it. |

| #16Suzume_StjohnAug 28, 2014 23:15:09 | I'll be speaking on them from a pure caster view, a gish view, and a melee with powers view. And will be mining this thread for ideas and combos and such as well too. This is full on a comunity project and I look forward to working with everyone to get knowledge of this most awesome of classes out to the masses. This class is a bit more complicated than others, so thought the guide would help those that need it more than having to pour through a ton of Q&A threads and such. |
| #17StevenandGabrielaAug 28, 2014 23:55:46 | I have this "truism" (read generalised rule of thumb that I can have exceptions for) that in the wilderness or campaign "trail" players are pretty much free to take short rests after battles or other encounters but in the dungeon if they attempt this they will pretty much guarantee (i.e. high probability on the dice of) extra encounters that effectively prohibit short rests. I guess the key is for the DM to pretty much let the players know the lay of the land before they make characters up and having a balanced approach to short rests which are clearly more important for some classes (such as the Warlock) than for others. If as DM you have a player that really likes the Warlock then give this part of the play experience due consideration when designing the campaign and how you run it. The idea is for the game to be enjoyed. |
| #18Yag007Aug 29, 2014 0:17:23 | well once your party hits level 3, rope trick is short rest in a can whenever you want it, so if you REALLY wanted to be a self sufficient Warlock with all his spells every fight, you could go 4 levels into wizard(you only need 3, but giving up the ability score seems stupid) and you can have rope trick slotted in for whenever you need it. |

| #33YunruAug 29, 2014 12:57:49 | I've been thinking about picking up Altered Form (wizard 2 iirc), because a magical +1 1d6 weapon is awesome, although I'm not sure you could use it as your Pact Weapon, which kinda nerfs most of the combos. |

Going Staff with it, you can use polearm master/Warcaster shinanigans too. Full gish character. I have, however, decided to drop the Guide, and just let the other one be the focus for warlock talk. Save me a bunch of work! I'll be posting my thoughts and suggestions there! |
