Hey guys, I was wondering if there was any sort of max ability scores when making a new PC. I thought I read somewhere that 15 (before racial adjustments) was the max. I thought maybe that was just an Adventure League stipulation.

If you use point buy, it's 15 +racial.

If you roll dice, it's 18 + racial.

You cannot go above 20 without magic.

Yeah, we are playing a campaign where the GM is allowing rolled PCs on the "honour system". One guy playing has three 18s, a 16 and a 13. The lowest stat he has is a 11; and this is without the dwarf racial bonus being added.

This is why I insist on rolled characters to be done at the table infront of everyone. Even though your player may have legitimately rolled that incredible array, it's pretty suspicious...

That being said, maxed out stats will not derail an adventure. The sorcerer in my group has had 20 in her Charisma (rolled 18 + Half-elf) since day 1 and it's never been a problem.

I've played in groups, even 5e groups, where the table rule was Roll 4d6, reroll any 1s or 2s, drop the lowest die, 9 times, drop the lowest 3 rolls.

I started liking the Standard Array back when they were first mentioned as an option, I believe, in the AD&D 2 DMG. Or Point Buy if people wanted that, but most felt it was too much math.

We had a new player come to my house like 20 years ago.  He wanted to play a Dwaven Battle Rager that he sweared he rolled up his stats were:

Str 18/00

Dex 18

Con 19

Int 10

Wis 10

Cha 18

We let him play for the hell of it.  Never saw him again.  But after that I told my friends that all new people need to roll their stats in front of us.

I allow 4d6 drop the lowest for my players. Best I Have seen lately is 11 13 13 13 15 17. One managed to get an 18 and a 6.

3x 18's has a 0.01% chance.

1 in every 10,000.
