I'm sure this must have been discussed already somewhere, but I cannot find it.

Does the fighter's duelist fighting style work with monk? "Unarmed strike" is listed in the meelee weapon table, so by RAW it should

It specifically says "weilding a one-handed weapon in one hand". Your fists are weapons, but you do not "weild them in one hand". They are your hand. You could use a shortsword for your normal attack and gain the bonus to damage, but not to your fists. Even if your fists did count, that would mean nobody could use the fighting style, since your uncounted hand would be considered weilding a weapon in the other hand.

You can say that you are only 'wielding' the other unarmed strike if you make an attack with it.  Not attacking with it?  Not wielding it.  Simple.

When you're thinking about whether you want to house rule this (since I'm also in the camp you do not wield your unarmed strike in your hand), think about how much benefit monks get from other fighting style options:

  • Archery: minimal benefit, since they can use ranged weapons but usually don't.
  • Defense: no benefit, since monks don't wear armor.
  • Dueling (RAW): some benefit, since it makes hand axes the optimal monk weapon at early levels, but the benefit is of limited use at higher levels and doesn't apply to your Martial Arts or Flurry of Blows attacks.
  • Great Weapon Fighting: some benefit, since low-level monks will use spears and quarterstaffs two-handed, but the benefit is of limited use at higher levels and doesn't apply to your Martial Arts or Flurry of Blows attacks.
  • Protection: no benefit, since monks cannot use shields.
  • Two-weapon fighting: minimal benefit, since most monks will prefer Martial Arts to TWF.

In contrast:

  • Dueling (houseruled to work with unarmed strike): Major benefit, since it will apply to all of the monk's attacks, and will also be applied 2-3 times per turn even from early levels.

Not only does dueling become make unarmed strike an optimal "weapon" to use, it also makes dueling a strictly superior choice to all other fighting styles, which is an indicator that it is probably overpowered.

Unfortunately not. Flurry of Blows specifies that the Bonus Action must be taken immediately after the attack. So no moving in between in order to activate FoB. You can shoot a bow at someone, then immediately FoB at an adjustent enemy (chancing an Opportunity Attack in the process) but that's as far as it goes. You can't even do it with melee attacks, in fact, even if you kill your target with the triggering attack.

Seriously, what was the thinking behind making FoB a strictly Unarmed Strike attack...

Fighters get a new attack every 5-ish levels. All it would take is a 2-level dip into Monk to enter Crazy Town...Or just 1-level since Martial Arts is a thing (Flurry gives 1 more attack at the cost of a Ki, essentially).

This is perhaps even worse than SorcX/Warlock2!

I don't see how GWF is relevant.... It requires the use of a heavy weapon, which procludes the use of Martial Arts (but not FoB)*

A monk using a heavy weapon cannot benefit from the Martial Arts ability. This means they must use STR for their attack/damage rolls, and cannot benefit from an increased damage die.

  • Monks are proficient in all simple weapons, yet if they use a greatclub, they do not gain any benefit from their Martial Arts feature. For the sake of example, let's pretend for a moment that greatclubs have the heavy property.

A monk using a heavy greatclub and GWF feat could deal up to 2d8+2STR+20 damage (3d8+3STR+30 if we are generous enough to include a cleave), although with a greatly reduced chance of hitting. On a crit, their attack will deal 2d8+STR+10 damage.

A monk using a quarterstaff+FoB could deal up to 4d10+4(Dex) damage instead (4d10+10 if we count +3 quarterstaff). On a crit they will deal 2d10+DEX damage.

*Flurry of Blows can be used with non-monk weapons, although in such case you use STR to attack, and your unarmed strikes deal 1+STR damage each (due to the fact your MA feature switches off when using non-monk weapons). This makes such use highly ineffective (except for the purpose of using stunning fist, shove, grapple, or other class features).

GWF doesn't require a Heavy weapon, it requires a Two-handed or Versatile weapon. Martial Arts cannot be used with Heavy or Two-Handed weapons, but Versatile weapons are just fine.

Thus, Martial Arts can be used with GWF with weapons like the Staff or Spear.
